But I want to keep the OEM petcock!!

I converted the OEM to manual and tested it with the old suck test and it was shutting off just fine.
I tested it in the off position when I first did the job. It took a while but it finally stalled.

I pulled into the garage last night and went to shut it off..........it was already in the off position.....duhuh!?!

I have a Dan Marc and I always tap the starter button so I'm not real worried about hydrolok but I wonder if I did something wrong.  I cut both diaphragms out and threw away the little piston and the spring.

What is wrong???

What is wrong ?

Easy, the design. If the switch/valve is not positioned exactly ,which also requires the nose and mouth to be contorted just right, it will not seal. The ball and seat as designed leaves a bit to be desired.
Pingle now makes a vacuum unit.

What is wrong is the design of the OE valve.  Its a low quality item at best.  Now you tear it part and change its function but its still a low quality part.

The only real good reason for wanting to keep the OE parts is because you have the chrome engine hanger and there will be a big hole.  So sell the chrome hangers to pay for the new quality valve (there are others besides Pingel) I have the Pingel and am very happy with it

if your running a dan mark. I wouldn't worry wether or not that petcock is shutting off.
I'm running a pingle set to reserve all the time and an electric fuel shutoff after that.
been that way for 8 years. have yet to have a problem. my covers don't have a hole in them so I couldn't get to the petcock even if I tried without removing the whole cover.

I converted my stock petcock to a manual by removing the diaphragm, spring, and piston and placing a thick piece of gasket material in between the pieces where the diaphragm was. I've ran this setup for over 5 yrs now. The on, off and res still function as normal.

I converted the OEM valve to manual years ago after the first fuel lock, it was a royal PITA as they don't seat well.
Installed the Pingle. Just my choice whether right or wrong.
But, with an electric solenoid/shut-off, why worry ? Let the original leak, should bother a thing.
