I loosen the 4 bolts/nuts. It doesn't take long.

It insures good alignment of everything that is along the rear axle compression line,, just a good habit to get into.

I know you just did it in the fall, but when you pull your tire, take those 4 nuts off and pull your pumkin with your tire.  Then look over everything again.

I have not seen anyone say that they had a failure by checking and regreasing the rear end, it was always the other way around.  Really, it does not take to much longer than just doing the tire change.  I think it adds half an hour at my house, and well worth the piece of mind.

Oh, and throw some bearings and seals in that wheel if you have not before. I keep hearing about guys running them till they go bad. That seems unwise to me.  I changed the tire and did rear end maint on a friends bike this weekend, he had a bad bearing in the rear and did not know it.  He thought it was the old tire causing his feelings.  It made the brake rotor eat into the pads and caliper.  Ate thru new brake pads in less than 5k miles.

I pay about 10 bucks a pop for good quality roller bearings meant to go in high speed-high force load printing equipment (flame on all you that only run honda parts) and then i just change them every 20k miles or when the tire is getting change around that.   So every other bike tire, every car tire change.  Costs me an extra 20 bucks for that tire change, and I dont have to worry about breaking down on the side of the road.
