I'm stumped and I could really use the help of you knowledgeable Valk folks...

I removed my rear wheel and removed the final drive and other parts listed on ChrisJ's rear end service PPT. This is my first time doing this, but surprisingly I feel like I have it all under control EXCEPT for one small part that I can't identify.

The thin spring you see in the two grainy photos is what I can't identify. I'm 90% sure it came out as I removed the drive shaft ("shaft, propeller" according to the parts diagram). But I've scoured through all the Valkyrie parts assembly diagrams, and I don't see anything that looks like this flimsy, thin spring. I'm assuming I need to replace this spring, because as you can see it's pretty un-wound or whatever.

I'm also attaching the parts diagram for the swingarm assembly. "Shaft, propeller" is #2 on the diagram. And, like I said, I don't see anything resembling this spring anywhere.

Anyone know what this is or have any advice for me? I want to order the parts I need (including this spring) ASAP.

Thanks!
-Ryan

Looks like the spring from the seal.

Thanks for your reply! Sorry to be dense, but...which seal do you mean? I can't find anything labeled as a seal in the swingarm diagram. Is it from somewhere other than this swingarm assembly?

#16   91261-ME9-005 OIL SEAL (27X43X7) $9.62   $6.35

It's the seal on the left side of the shaft in your picture.  The spring is part of the seal.  I'd have to check, but I believe the spring goes towards the left also.

He's referring to the seal that's on your driveshaft(in your pic). And I would agree. I'm curious how that happened? You will need a new seal and you will have to remove the circlip and spring to replace it. Getting the spring and clip back on is a b#*~ch! At least for me it was. If you can get someone to help it should be easier. Also do a search, someone made a jig that looks like the way to go cooldude

Rob, how's the trailer hitch?

I'm also curious how that happened, guessing on install.

Great, was kind of a bear to get lined up and on. Could have used a helper. Kind of like compressing that damn spring on the driveshaft and putting the clip on  2funny. How did the trike turn out?

Thank you, also! I found the post about the jig to reinstall this, and now I'm definitely dreading getting this piece back in there!

As to how it happened, all I did was pull the driveshaft out of the swing arm. Thought that was what I was supposed to do, but this is my first time doing it, so I wouldn't be surprised if I did something wrong. This is the first time the rear end has been disassembled since I've owned the bike, so I can't say for sure whether the previous owner (or whomever) installed something incorrectly.

I actually don't even see the "seal" part (#16) with my drive shaft. I guess it must be stuck up in the swing arm tube where I can't see it?

Thank you again, everyone.

Ryan, your seal is on the shaft in your picture, it just looks like it's in a different place in the parts picture to show were/when it's installed.

It's still in my garage, the installer in NH was, how do I say this diplomatically, messed up.  And MickManchester, the owner, was involved in a crash in England and is laid up.  Other than that, it looks good, needs paint, but looks good.

Diplomacy is highly overrated  2funny
Ryan like he said the parts diagram is confusing, it looks like it should be on the other end but it's just showing it before it's installed cooldude

Ryan,  I just went and checked. The spring part of the seal faces the splines on the left in your picture.  Your seal is on the shaft and if you bend it back some you will see where the spring goes in a slot in the seal.  Yours popped out for some reason, but don't see where it would be a concern. just replace it.

Tell you the truth, can't see what diff the spring makes, it's so flimsy.

Thanks for your patience in explaining this to me. I've had a loooonnng day. I see the seal now. For anyone who might have this issue in the future and find this post, the Clymer manual, pg. 378 has a picture that shows it a bit more clearly than the OEM parts blowout diagrams.

I place the driveshaft in a vice and then use a piece of wire bent into a "u shape" and attached to 2 sides of the spring. Pulling on the wire with pliers, etc. easily compresses the spring, etc.

Do you have a link to that jig to reinstall the circlip and spring? A curious guy would like to see it.  Smiley

Quexpress, I don't know how to do links or pics (dumbass dinosaur) but if you do search under driveshaft springs there was a post by vmb. In that post hubcap responded with a pic of his jig. Actually pretty simple and ingenious  cooldude

Look at the top of your screen. There will be a URL address such as this one:

If you click on the above link, the post in which hubcapc replied will appear.

This is the pic of the jig.

If you wish, glance at the following post for instructions on posting pics.

Yeah I've tried. I'm going to have my 8 year old grandson help me one of these days tickedoff Well actually I haven't tried linking . just pics a couple times. And it would come up saying the file size was to big and I couldn't figure how to make it smaller. One of my workers says I'm a dinosaur , I think he's probably right !
