In prep' for Sturgis, I just completed an oil change. Amsoil 20W/50 Full Synthetic; stock oil filter. I ran my engine hot, leveled the bike, loosened the oil filler cap and dip stick, then pulled the drain plug and oil filter. Drained overnight.
Next morning I put on a new filter, replaced the drain plug and filled her up with 4Qts. Traditionally, 4Qts puts me right at the FULL mark on the dip stick, done. This time I'm about 1-2mm over the FULL mark on the dip stick.
Do I need to train a couple of ounces, or am I OK?
Thanks in advance for your any feedback or personal experiences you can share.

So what is 2mm ? About 1/16" ? I don't think I'd worry about that. An engine shouldn't be run overfilled, but, 1/16" shouldn't bother. If you're worried about it, just loosen the filter and let some out.

Not an issue IMO. I and many others add 4 qts with an oil and filter change. I believe the service manual calls for 3.9.

I believe you are proving the warning I posted in Oct that we really cannot trust the volume in these oil containers to be perfectly right on and consistent. That's why I use a measured funnel and then I know Im putting in 4 qts. Ya I know about the 3.9 thing......140K miles I haven blown anything yet.
I agree you are fine at that much over, but next time if you want to be sure.....measure it in

You didn't say if you ran the engine for a few minutes prior to checking the oil level. When I replace the oil and filter, I always fill the filter before putting it on, then add the rest of 4 qts. to the crankcase. Next, run the engine for a few minutes to let it work completely through the system, shut it off and let sit while you clean up the area. Now, put the bike upright and check the dipstick without screwing it in. I've never been "over" on a refill.

I did that and decided that little bit over wouldn't hurt but then she started smoking out of the left pipe after sitting on the kickstand. It would stop smoking after riding a few min.
I drained to just below the top mark and it stopped

If you drain it well and dump in a gallon.........it doesn't really matter what the dipstick reads (especially if you have an aftermarket adjustable one). In fact I haven't seen my dipstick in a long time. If there is no oil on the floor when I go to ride the bike........I just assume its all still inside. 6-7K miles later I drain it and yep a gallon out and another gallon in. Cant get more simple than that.

A full gallon of Rotella, puts me right on the OE dip mark every time.
(I do a better job draining than I used to.... about 1/10 of a qt better).

Yes, of course; after I changed the oil I always run the engine for 3 min., let it sit for 3 min. and then check the oil level.
I think what I'm hearing is if I'm a little over the FULL mark on the dipstick, I'm fine.
Thanks for the feedback, it is a gift. See you in Sturgis

How do you keep the oil in the filter on the Valk? It goes on horizontal, and the oil runs out while you are threading it on. MP

I've always put 4 quarts in - no problems. I do know of one local rider who put in 8 quarts one time - it only ran on 5 cylinders. So he bought a new engine. When he drained the old engine before pulling it out of the frame, he found out about the 8 quarts. Put 4 back in and it ran well. So he had a spare engine for a while. His handle then became "dipstick".

MP I also do it the same way as John and ... yes .... filter in horizontally ... and oil doesn't run out while threading in the filter. Note: I do not fill it completely ... about 1/4 inch from the top.
