Duane is much better today. His blood pressure is approaching normal, for him. Yesterday BP was 97/57, today 122/70. Kidneys starting to function, platelets up 25% from yesterday. He is looking better and feeling better. Still very weak. Pneumonia better and leg infection coming under control. Lots happening in his body. He is out of ICU and in a regular room, #312.

If you try to contact on his phone, he may or may not respond.  Texting would probably be best.  Lots going on with lots of nurses, aides, and doctors.

I did not see him today.  Had a broken water pipe at the house I discovered at 5:45 this morning.

However, Phyllis was with him from about noon until around six this evening.  He had surgery to put in a dialysis port.  Then received his first dialysis treatment.  She told me he was resting through most of the dialysis treatment when she left him a little after six.

He texted me at 7:23 saying "I am done for the night".  Hopefully that means they will let him rest and not be pestering him all night.

I hope to be back out there tomorrow morning.  Barring anymore plumbing problems.

For those of you who missed it, there was never an initial post about what was going on.  He was in rough shape and I didn't want to post anything without his approval.

Many things which complicated other things.  Boiled down to an old infection in his right leg plus pneumonia, which we think, caused his kidneys to be overworked and he went into renal failure.

He ended up in ICU for a couple days, received two units of blood and massive antibiotics to knock the infection down.  Then moved to a regular room and yesterday ended up with surgery to attach the dialysis port and start of what we hope is just a few dialysis treatments until body is back to normal.

Two days ago his kidneys were working better.  He had a 25% improvement in his platelets in a 24 hour period.  SO, I want to think that things are definitely going in the right direction.

I'm not Ray, but I don't know about the Papering thing ... I'll have to ask.

He's had two dialysis treatments so far, seems "more better" as an old friend used to say.  Still not sleeping, but hospitals are famous for that.  He HOPES to be discharged on Saturday -- we'll have to wait and see.

He's appreciating the texts, but not quite up to trying to type replies.

I asked if there was  a service at the hospital so out of town friends and family could send emails and was told they did not offer that type of service...so just text him...

Rather hard to say just what he is thinking but I will give you my impressions.

Duane has had several visitors in past 24 hours and he is most grateful for each of them.  He thanks each of you for your texts and/or calls but his responses are rather restricted due to his condition.

I got in to see him late morning today just after they got the dialysis machine working again.  (If it had been a motorcycle he would have fixed it for them).  Sat around for about 2.5 hours while they finished his treatment.  Dialysis gives him a horrible headache.  Nurse asked him how bad it was on a scale from 1-10.  He emphatically replied "TEN".  Got him something that got that under control. Then got him to eat a little of his lunch and suggested that he rest.  I think it was a pretty rough morning for him.  Blood pressure was much better today.  I think it was 121/65.

No more dialysis until next week.  Think they are going to evaluate the results Monday and go from there.  Hopefully this afternoon and the weekend will give him a little time to recuperate a little of his strength.

He appreciates all thoughts and prayers.  I really think an email bombing would overwhelm him.  He is coping with a lot right now.

Today's update:  He is feeling, looking, acting much better.  I was surprised when I walked in to see him sitting on the edge of his bed with his lunch in front of him and texting back and forth with T.P. and Nancy.

He got some sleep last night.  Ate a good breakfast.  Ate a reasonable lunch while I was there.  A whole turkey sandwich and some ice cream.  Most I have seen him eat in the past week.  He commented that he woke up this morning feeling much better, the sun was shining in his window and everything just seemed better.  He has been up and moving around some though not walking a whole lot at yet.

I left him with him lying down and feeling well fed and trying to rest some more.  I think that is the thing that will help him the most right now.

So good to see him coming out of it.

After church today went up to see the Wizard.

First thing he says is that he "feels great".  "Not quite as good as yesterday, but still great."

He was even joking a little and flirting with nurses.  I saw him actually smile a few times.  He is truly feeling much better.

He says they are supposed to do another dialysis tomorrow and he is hoping to go home Tuesday or Wednesday.  We shall see what the Docs say tomorrow.

Overall, looking good.

Duane, now don't over do it and have a relapse.

Take it easy for a couple of weeks and gradually come to full steam ahead.

Glad to hear you are out of the Horse Pistol.

I saw him last night, he is really hoping to get out today.  He may need a lift home.  Doctors are not doing right by him, and he has been getting more demanding for proper care.   Last night the nurse tells us that the hospital does not have a doctor on site (except for the ER doc!)  Did you ever hear of such a thing?   She says only teaching hospitals have a doc on full time. WTH???
