Could it be possible that during the desmog process a freeze plug could be improperly installed and make a ticking noise like an exhaust leak? If not a freeze plug what else in the desmog process could possible cause a ticking noise?

FYI - I have been plagued by a ticking noise since I got the bike. New exhaust gaskets (with high temp silicone), exhaust headers tightened 1lb above torque spec. Nipples on intakes properly sealed. Valves are adjusted. It has been suggested that the ticking comes from the internal oil pump chain (anybody experience this?). The bike has always run great and only has 42k well taken care of miles on it.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked your valves. Might need an adjustment. I had a slight ticking on my standard before doing it.

Generally its a vacuum leak, exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks can be a royal PITA to correct, even the smog ports.
But, some of these monsters just tick. Its one of lives little wonderments. The internal chain theory has been brought up for years, so much so that it may not be a theory.

Good call, but I forgot to mention I have also tackled the Valves and they are adjusted correctly.
