Does anyone know if it's possible to change the shifter seal without removing the shaft?  I now have the Clymer manual for my '98 Valkyrie, and in order to remove the shifter spindle it says I have to split the cases – and I don't think it's worth it.  There seems to be minimal play in the shifter spindle (I think the needle bearings and the shifter spindle itself are fine), but I'm starting to see a little oil seepage around the seal – it is 16 years old now.  I was just wondering if anybody has tried, and either succeeded or failed, to change the shifter seal with the shaft still in it.  Thanks.

On the subject of shifters......how much play is normal?? Is there a video of what is a normal amount of 'wiggle' in the shifter?

Put it this way, its normal that upon handling (by hand) one would think there is too much play.  Unless you ride with your left hand down there wiggling it all the time you wont feel it while riding.  If the new seal stops the leak, just ride and stop wiggling it.
