Didn't want to hi-jack another thread so here is a picture of my Alternator Brushes I changed in 2012.
New brush between the used ones.
The 98 Tourer had 95k miles at the time.

Replaced my brushes a few years back with about 60k on the odo.  The old ones were worn down just short of the hole in the sides that's used for installation.  Yours look like they are worn down into those holes.  IMO, that's probably to far.  I inspect the alternator every two years as part of winter maintenance.

What else besides brushes tends to fail? Bearings? Coupling rubber?  Anything tend to be torn up in removal and disassembly?  Wondering what all I should get to have on hand.

Thanks

Mine didn't show any wear except the brushes.

You need to watch how the alternator comes out of the frame. The way it's tilted, twisted etc. Installation will be easy if you can reverse removal exactly every detail.
