On an old post it was recommended to put a snubber in the vacuum line to the petcock. What is a "snubber"?

The vacuum from just one cylinder is a pulse vacuum. It pulls and stops with each intake/comp/combustion/exhaust stroke. A snubber is a small orifice device to make the vacuum a more constant pull all the time.

One of the posts in the archives has a link to Mcmaster-Carr with part numbers. I'll sell you mine for $15 + shipping. I went electric and disabled the vacuum part of the petcock instead. Never installed the snubber. Email if you're interested.

There is one built into the cover...which is why they give you a new one in the rebuild kit.

Many thanks  CA ExhaustCoatings for the info and source. This is the first new (to me) idea I have heard that might help mitigate petcock troubles, and their terrible consequences. Do you think there is any need for the stainless snubber? I guess I can find the hose barbs to hook it up locally.
So where in South Jersey are you? I'm in Lower Delaware. Let me know if you're heading my way.

John

Brass is fine, that is what I used. Install it with the disc towards the intake manifold. I installed it 3-4" from the manifold connection just under the carbs. I secured it to the carb support bracket.

Finding a female 1/8" hose barb is the hard part to find. mc'master has both.  http://www.mcmaster.com/#44555k123/=1qq4na   $2.51
http://www.mcmaster.com/#44555k128/=1qq4y9   $8.69  snubber .5 micron disc http://www.mcmaster.com/#4034k11/=1qq5ag   $1.00

I tested it, it is a very poor one if that is what it is. It acted more like a check valve that bleeds down. if anything it doesn't work well for extreme on/off vacuum conditions during on/off throttle.

The petcock is fully open at 2"HG vacuum when I checked it's opperation. Your vacuum level is above 6" or higher almost all the time, doesn't this means that the diaphram is all the way open and the pulsing has no effect at all?  ???

Another way to dampen the pulse's would be to connect several intake lines together..

My local stealer knows absolutely nothing about Valkyries......its like a Valkyrie isint even a Honda to them.  I never trust their opinion or answer.......they usually ask me about stuff, and when I buy a part there they almost just give me the computer so I can find what I want.......very sad

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "Install it with the disc towards the intake manifold." I got the items you recommended (as I've had a couple of stock petcock diaphrams go bad) and I'm not sure I see exactly see what you mean by the "disc" when looking at the snubber. Is the "disc" the flat end of the snubber?

Would appreciate any additional clarification.  Smiley

the one end should have a disc, I guess u could call it the flat end, the other end u should be able to look down into it. check out the manufactuter link I provided also for clarification. I hope that helps u.
