I know this is a doofus question but I have never rebuilt a carb before and am almost finished with my first one.  I have to service the Pilot Screw on the carb and have to ask what tool do I use to remove it?  Is it the same on cars and motorcycles - in other words, can I go to Autozone or something and ask for a pilot screw tool or is it specific to the Valkyrie and I have to go through Honda or something.

It is mostly round with a flat part on it.  Manual says to screw it in until it seats all the way and mark the amount of turns so you can put it back the same way.  The kit I got from Redeye has the o rings and spring to change - but I can't determine how to take it out.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. cooldude

Hey bud, it takes a special tool that matches the shape you described. I know some owners have used some stiff metal tubing and flattened one side and made that work. I have the socket to remove them, but before reinstalling I always cut a slot in the head from the flat side to the opposite side. Then in the future you just use a stubby screwdriver. And....put just a tiny dab of anti seize on them before reinserting. Good luck, wish I lived closer, I'd help. I'm good at opening pop-tops.  cooldude Grin

Thanks John.  So, the socket is a standard shaped thing?  I can go to an autoparts store and pick up a generic pilot screw tool (or socket)?

I just didn't want to go in and ask for a pilot screw tool and sound like I once did asking for anchovie seeds (since when I was a kid, I thought they were a salty tasting plant).  2funny

DIdn't want to look like a total doofus going in and asking for one....of course, the closest autoparts store is so bad, even if there was no such thing, they would probably have me search for an hour through the store.  tickedoff

Here is what you need Strider.  I think Redeye might sell one too.  And you need one of the little hex adapters for your quarter inch drive socket set.

Thanks Thunderbolt!  I will run over to the parts store and see if they have anything tomorrow - if not, will order it.  I would like to have Traveller back together before I leave to Africa.  I have to pick some other stuff up anyway, so will check....thanks again Brother! cooldude

Warren, doubt you'll find anything like it in an auto parts store. It is a special tool due to the shape. If you order it, while waiting you might try some small diameter SS tubing, flatten out one side to match the shape of the D headed pilot screw. If they come out easy, just might work for you. If not, don't force it or you'll end up buying new pilots.

If the ' D ' wrench/tool doesn't work, whether home-made or bought, let us know. You may have to brush the dust off the Dremel.
Don't worry about turning them in to count the turns, just take them out. Set them at 2.25 turns upon re-installation [35s].
Some of the fellas may talk you into installing 38 lows which then set at 1.5-1.75 turns.
