I have a 1998 valk. The power stays on whether the key is in the ignition or not. I have to disconnect battery in order to kill the power. All other electrical systems work fine.

What parts should I try replacing first?

I would probably look at the ignition switch. That's where power from battery is terminated to the rest of the bike.

Kinda sounds like what Bighead said.  How are you shutting off the engine ?

Probably using the handle bar kill switch.

I'd sure investigate the ignition switch 1st.

If it is good, then the only thing you can do is get your little meter out and start testing following the wiring diagram.

Are you saying that you are able to remove the key when it is in the ON position, or that everything stays on when you turn off the key?  The first would be the result of a worn-out lock cylinder; the second the result of either a bad switch or, if you've just purchased the bike, some wiring modification by the previous owner.  You also haven't stated in what circumstances this change occurred.

To expand on the ignition switch, it may just need some cleaning.  Carefully pry the switch apart and chances are you'll find it gummed up.  Sometimes you may have to pry the little tabs inside up a bit to make better contact.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry it took so long to get back. I kill the engine with the kill switch. I do not even have the key in the ignition. I keep it in the seat latch so I can remove the seat and disconnect the battery when I stop somewhere. Then repeat the process when ready to leave. As long as the battery is connected, all power stays on; key or no key..

I was ready to replace the ignition switch, but a buddy said it might be the main relay. Could he be right?

Your buddy is clueless, at least when it comes to Valkyries; there is no main relay.  Replace your ignition switch.

Yes sir:  what Gryphon Rider just said.

After replacing the switch, keep those firkin pressure washer nozzles off of all that bike and especially, the switches, wheel bearings, calipers and the like.

That's what I thought. I will get a new switch. And RJ, I always hand wash my bike. Those pressure washers are THE DEVIL!  Evil Thanks Ya'll.
