It just needs to be silicate free..... isn't that all or almost all of it these days?

This is fine, or you can pay 4 times the amount for the kind that has a HONDA label on it.  I have been using this for 7 or 8 years now, no issues other than trying to decide which chrome pieces to buy with all the $$ Im saving

I know it is not responsive to your question, but I have found that the price of pre-mix includes a pretty hefty fee for the 1/2 gallon of water.

A long time ago when our Valks were new, most coolants contained silicates to keep the cooling system clean.  Unfortunately, these silicates quickly damaged the water pump seals in Wings and Valkyries.  Many owners learned this the hard way.

A favorite silicate-free coolant back then was Havoline Extended Life, a Dex-Cool organic acid type (OAT) coolant.  It was widely available in places like Wal Mart.  I've used that stuff for years with great results, but it is nard to find these days.

Today most coolants use the OAT technology in place of silicates, so you have lots of choices that cost far less than the Honda brand.  Just check the label or manufacturer's website.  Or buy coolant in gallons from a Honda car dealer where it costs far less.

crappy water here so have to also buy a gallon of water then try to mix it 50/50 so its just easier to buy the premix.

If you mix your own coolant, it's risky to use tap water.  I did that years ago and had to have a Toyota truck radiator cleaned out because of the deposit build up.  I've used distilled water ever since.

I thought this was a helpful chart:

The Zerex Asian antifreeze is a 50/50 mix. They state: "Asian manufacturers specify a silicate free HOAT formula with a phosphate additive to protect their cooling systems from rust and corrosion. Zerex Asian Vehicle has been designed to meet these requirements and be compatible with their engines and cooling systems. Zerex Asian Vehicle has been premixed with demineralized water for added protection and convenience."

The Prestone doesn't have silicates but also doesn't have phosphates which are desirable for corrosion protection in Asian vehicles.

As the chart shows, the color coding of antifreeze's is done with purpose. I only use the pink/red stuff for all my Toyota/Lexus/Honda cars and bikes. I've even been known to go to a Toyota dealer to get their 50/50 pink stuff if I can't find it elsewhere.

That Zerex chart only shows part of the changing coolant spec story.  Just a few years ago, most Ford and Chrysler vehicles called for G-05 coolant, which was a hybrid that I believe still had some silicates.  However, my 2010 Ford Fusion calls for the Asian type organic acid coolant, probably because that generation of Fusions shared many parts with the Mazda 6.  But my 2011 F-150, with Ford's new 32 valve 5 liter V8, requires the orange Dex-Cool coolant like GM cars use.  And, after checking Ford's website, nearly all new Fords use Dex-Cool as well.

Apparently Chrysler was the last of the Big 3 to dump silicates and switch to OAT coolant, in 2013.  So the trend continues and coolants with silicates could soon become hard to find.
