I have a ’97 Valk which is in like new condition, has always run perfectly and which I have made every effort to keep that way.  Even running the bike a couple times a week when I couldn’t actually get out and ride it.  Despite my good intentions I have been struck down by the ethanol induced varnish in the gas monster which clogged up the engine preventing it from even starting.   I guess I just wasn’t using up enough of the existing fuel.
I siphoned out the old fuel, replaced with new hi octane with addative and got it to run again but only roughly.  Not good.
Any advice on the steps I should take to clean out the fuel system, best products to disolve varnish etc?

I used an external tank with 1/2 Seafoam,1/2 gasoline when I had a jet get clogged from the ethanol stuff.  I ran about a half gallon of this mixture through it and let it sit for a couple of days.  When I cranked it after letting it sit, it was fine.

You didn't mention what the 'additive' was.. But, if the bike was run on a somewhat frequent basis then probably a couple tanks with good heavy doses of sea-foam will work.. I just recently was told by the person that got me to use sea-foam about 30 years has switched to a product called star-brite[ I think thats how you spell it] and he claims it works better than sea-foam.. This man owns the best marina in the area so he deals with fuel varnish on a big scale..

Here's what I found on it. If interested

BTW I use Techron additive from time to time and doubt I'll go to StarBrite or back to Seafoam.
Texico adds Techron to their pump fuel. Wish I had it available locally.
Techron clears up pilot jets much more efficiently then SeaFoam and is a great product as regular maintenance [non stabilizing though]. IMO

It's been reported here on the forum that Techron is a stronger cure for your problem.  And don't be shy about how much to use. Pour in the whole bottle. You will find no ill effect from this process except maybe, unclogged jets.

Techron is much stronger than Seafoam and each has its place, for this application and since you do have a external tank use a 50/50 mix of the Techron and gas run the engine for a bit. Then put a bottle of Techron in a full tank of gas and run it out. If the carbs can be cleaned without taking them apart this will do the trick.

I agree, from personal experience and research. Folks rave about Seafoam. It's never worked for me. I only use it as a preventative maintenance or for storage, lot's of good stuff in it.
  Just not the best thing for CLEANING.
I've used Techron on more than one Valkyrie with success. Techron works, from experience, not opinion.
  Seafoam has great qualities for upper cylinder lubrication, neutalizing poor fuel quality, and preserving fuel for storage.
Techron to fix your problem, Seafoam or Lucas to maintain and prevent future problems.
