Pulled my piston out of the clutch slave cylinder for a rebuild on my basket case 99 standard. I ordered the repair it with the inner seal, cup seal and spring. The inner seal was tough to get out a piece at a time. I found a metal ring cup shaped underneath the seal. I read the Honda book and it said to reinsert the metal ring under the new seal on top of it with a special Honda tool. Well I beat the crap out of the seal trying to jam it in to the piston with the metal ring in it. My question is does it need the metal ring in it ? If so how in the world d I get around the special tool ? should I just order the complete assy of the piston. spring cup seal, inner seal. $85.00 from the Honda dealer, not cheap.
Many thanks guys for your help. Smiley

That being the case, I would suggest to buy the complete piston assembly.

Thanks for the replies. I checked the Goldwing web link and looking at the picture of the disassembled
clutch slave cylinder it shows the center seal but no metal ring that was in side it. I think it's still inside the old seal pictured. I have bought everything in the kit but unfortunately destroyed the center seal. I would like to get just another center seal and use it with out the metal ring inside it. Has anybody ever done it that way? and does it work? I used the K&L rebuild kit.
Thanks for your help   Smiley

Trying to save a few bucks buying aftermarket rebuild kits

is fraught with peril.  Over the course of this forum, there have been many

reports of problems trying to make things work as designed.

As some aftermarket items work properly, the majority of

complaints are usually dealing with the aftermarket rebuild kits.

The smart move is always with OEM although the savings

cannot always be measured in dollars.

I rebuilt my slave cylinder a year back when I first bought the bike and I used the K&L rebuild kit. Never had any issues installing then nor have I had any problems to date.
