I Bought a 2001 IS about 2 months ago. I have a real bad back firing problem on the left side. I have tried to tighten up the boots thinking maybe it was a vacuum leak. I just changed out the petcock valve and it seems to be a little worse. When I say back firing I mean like a gun going off. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You have a vacuum leak somewhere, do a desmogged on it and get rid of all of those hoses under there.

Intake O rings may be bad. Vacuum hoses bad. Loose intake clamps (three per cylinder?).
Maybe check the plugs for clues.

It sounds as though you have a vacuum leak or two or three, as the others mentioned. Check or better yet replace the vacuum lines and the vacuum caps. Once thats done, if it continues, you have varnished low jets. An easy way to check is to spray some ether [start fluid] around the base of the intakes [while idling] and see which ones make any difference.

If none of those suggestions work, check the cam timing belt on that side. You didn't mention mileage but the cam belt may have jumped a tooth or two.

I expect popping when there's a vacuum leak, but actual backfiring? Isn't that a symptom of something else?

I don't recall ever, anything about a slipped timing belt, all the years, in this forum.

I wanted to give an update. I decided to desmog my bike to see if this would help with the back firing. While tearing it down to get to the emission control parts when I took the air cleaner box out and disconnected all six carbs I found that two of the rubber boots were folded in and allowing air to be sucked it. After replacing the boots and desmogging it I took a test ride today and had no back firing and it ran great. Thanks to everyone for the advice.
