When ambient temp is way up there and the bike ('99 Std) is hot from riding, if I shut the bike off and restart within minutes, I hear a snap, like an electrical short as I release the starter button. I've cleaned up the relay (?) under the right side cover as mentioned here in various other posts and completed the starter switch maintenance. The noise comes from somewhere "down there," so I don't think it's the switch. Can't quite figure out from where it's coming, nor why it only happens when the bike is really hot. Any ideas?

Mine does this as well...and always has...
I *think* it's not an electrical snap, but rather, perhaps, a single predetoniation/knock or such.

Daniel may be on to something. If it only happens when it is hot, remove the side covers, get your ear down there and have someone start the bike for you. You might be able to detect exactly where the noise comes from.

Sometimes you just have to look at the problem from a different angle. BTW, nice looking girls.

BTW, nice looking girls. Thanks, and if you....ahem.....blow them up enough, you'll see there are Valk emblems on their shirts to make it Valk related. (I leveraged the pic from someone else. I owe them thanks, too. )

Daniel is correct on the detonation, as the engine starts immediately when really hot.

I know this topic has been dead for years, but seriously this is okay, this noise? Since things got hot up here in Seattle this spring, I've been hearing this pop anytime I try to start the bike when it's really hot, and it's scary. What I'm reading from 2009 in this thread is that that's normal for some Valkyries to do it – a pre-detonation thing? I'm going to go ahead and clean and check and if necessary replace my starter relay, but it sounds like that won't change anything if it's this predestination thing. . Curious.

What do your plugs look like - any indication of extremely lean mixture conditions?

No I'd say actually the opposite – she runs a bit rich, which I think makes her happier.

I found the same years ago in Toronto. Rush hour traffic, 32ºC, and on reserve. Turned the bike off when stuck in traffic and started it when traffic moved...SNAP! Everyone on the board said it was normal and not to worry about it. Fred.
