Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 2000 Honda Valkyrie GL1500CF with Predator Lehman trike kit with only 11K miles on it from a close friend. The trike is in mint condition. I am 57 years old and this is the very first time I ever own or even ride a motorcycle. I am very proud of the purchase I made and have been wondering why I did not purchase a motorcycle sooner. I had the carburetors rebuilt and all gaskets and hoses changed. The trike is running excellent. I am changing the front brake pads but need help with the rear drum brakes. Does anyone know how I would go about finding out what pads go on the rear? Again, it is a Predator by Lehman trike kit. I am enjoying the Valkyrie Riders Cruiser Club and thank you all for letting me join.  coolsmiley

Go to  triketalk.com  & sign up.  Free.  There is a guy on there who goes by LeeHMan or something like that who is associated somehow with Lehman Trikes & is very knowledgeable about their trikes.  He will help you with your question

If the bike only has 11k on the clock I doubt very seriously it needs front or rear brake pads replaced.

Welcome.

The front pads were getting worn down. I just figured while I was at it I would replace the rear as well- whether needed or not. The age of the pads on the rear concern me- they are 14 yrs old. Just feel safer doing so.
 Love your bike...
Thank you.

I have a '2000 Valk Trike Lehman Preditor. I  also purchased it with 11,000 miles. The front pads were worn down and only one rear tire would lock up when purposely attempted.

It had been over thirty years when I had last been into a drum brake. Opening it up, I found the shoes to be barely worn and the cylinders dry but the shifter side had a broken cable in the self-adjustment mechanism which automatically adjusted the brakes as needed when applying the brakes while rolling backward - strange for a trike with no reverse gear.

Anyway, I took the broken adjuster mechanism to my favorite parts counter buddy & asked for another one. Turns out it was a 70's Ford Mustang brakes - +/- $5.00 for a pair of adjusters.

Lesson learned was to periodically go to a sloped parking lot, roll backward & slam the brakes a few times.

At first, I was disappointed to have drums on the rear. However after riding it for a while, I came to really like the drum brakes. They are much more progressive than discs. You can lock them up, but you have to really intend to do it. It allows rear only feathering of the brakes if you need to bleed off some speed after entering the corner a little too hot for comfort and too late to safely use the front brake - it's sort of like a tail on a kite.

My Trike has a RoadSmith Independent rear setup, and has disc brakes back there.

They will bring you down off of a dollar real quick and straight.

I never did like drum brakes, they can be a pain in the you know where.

My Chevy Trike used to have drum brakes till I couldn't find drums anymore.

Four years ago I contacted a brake place in FL, forgot the name, they sent me a setup for a Pontiac Safari rear end.

My son and I put the Disc on in the shop one day when it was slow.

The last trip he and I went on, honest to God, if I'd of still had the drum setup on it, I would have stuck the front wheel right in this kids drivers door when he pulled out in front of me.     The disc brakes stopped me about 5" from his door.     We both about crapped out pants.   He made it to the passengers seat, mouth and eyes WIDE OPEN.
