I just pulled apart my front end and ready to do some rebuilding. I'm going to have the forks rebuilt(already have the progressive springs), mirror polish the forks, and install new rotors and pads. It's my first time pulling the front end apart, is it normal that one fork appears to have some dampening left and the other is like a pogo stick?. I've never had any leaking.

Both should have dampening,,, better check to make sure the fluid didn't all leak out before you got the bike,,?? If so,, you will surely need bushings,, maybe a new tube,, at least.

I can't imagine it would have leaked out prior to me purchasing it. I bought it in 2003 with 680 miles on it.

My understanding of the system is one fork dampens on the down stroke and the other dampens on the up stroke.
I can't believe the fuild leaked w/o you knowing it.

The forks are very different from each other on the inside... you probably don't have a problem...

Both forks are different, but both forks contain (different amounts) of fluid...

While the hydraulic units are very different, they should both dampen,,, neither should be like a "pogo stick",, if one of yours is, you will find SOMETHING wrong when rebuilding.
I too think the paint job is nice,, looks great.
After thinking about it for a moment,,, it really depends on how much compression you are getting on the one that feels like a "pogo stick",,, if you are only getting an inch or two of compression is is hard to tell,, on the other hand, if you are getting 4 or five inches and it feels like a pogo stick,,, there is a problem. If they are going to be rebuilt,, any problems will show up on disassembly and inspection.

You got the forks out so it's best to just do it all, the sliders, bushings seals etc. You will probably notice the fluid in one fork is much different than the other. One might appear to be gear oil and the other red transmission fluid. Just get some new synthetic fork oil to finish it off and call it good.
Check the steering stem bearings for indexing while you got most of the weight off it. You should be able to feel it if there is any.
Have fun with your winter project.... And I agree, nice paint.
By chance do you remember where ya got that blue racking? Builders Square when they closed? I got some just like it.

Before making statement about the front shocks and their
composition it would be a wise procedure to consult
the repair manual. It's pretty easy to tell who does
this simple task and who does not.

I'm actually going to have one of the local Valkyrie wizards who has done many of these fork rebuilds do it for me. I'm sure he will give me the details after the job is complete. I'm going to have him disassemble them and give them back to me for polishing. Just purchased the buffer and look forward to this project. I will post the details of that project when I get to it.
