Can someone look at the picture below and tell me if the gear selector is shown in the neutral position? The Honda shop Manual has a lot of info but does not say what gear the transmission is in, or should be in when the transmission cover is removed.

thanks

Thanks for the answer but I am trying to find out how the neutral switch is oriented when the transmission is in neutral. This is not my bike nor do I have anything apart. This is for a project I am working on.

Send Attic Rat a PM and a link to this question ya wrote.

It has been too long ago since I had mine apart.   Mine was apart in 98, And at my age, I just do not remember.

In the Honda shop manual, at the top of page 10-10 it explains how to orient the switch. Basically, the long side of the pin goes opposite the little square tab extension on the plate just below it. It has to fit in the slot of the round piece at the lower left of your picture...where your large arrow is. An important thing to remember; put the cover in place once you feel the switch it set correctly, hold it in place with a single bolt at top & bottom, turn on the key to see if you have a "neutral" light. Don't put it all together first then check, you might end up taking it all off again just to spend 5 seconds repositioning the switch. Good luck!   cooldude

Thank you, I appreciate the information.

What the manual does not say is, Was the transmission in neutral when they disassembled it?
Does this picture show the engine in neutral?

Doesn't make any difference, you're not replacing all that stuff as I understand it. In any case, put the bike in neutral and note the position of the linkage/ratchet mechanism. With the tranny in neutral and the pin's long end set as shown when assembled, you should be fine. If you didn't have the bike in neutral and took all that stuff apart before looking and reading further, now you may have a problem. Usually, if you put the bike in gear, that linkage will only go together one way. For what it's worth....yes, the picture at the top as I remember it does show the tranny in neutral. One way to check is position the switch as shown with the cover still removed, then plug it in and turn on the key. If the neutral light comes on, then the switch is in neutral. Then compare that to the position of the piece the switch mounts against. If it's the same then you can be pretty certain the shifting apparatus is also in neutral.

What parts did you remove so far, and did you read the manual first? Also, what was the purpose of removing the front cover. It may turn out to be a change or repair with limited return on your investment of time and money, expecially if done wrong.
