I'm sure someone in this group has cleaned the carbs up and replaced some inner parts. Any thoughts on where to pick them up besides honda direct line ? Or something like a carb kit ?

Hey Ed good to see you on the old Fl. Board. I have cleaned up more than a half dozen sets of these carbs. New set of plugs, new O-rings for the intakes. New hoses on the petcock and if you are not going to desmog it while you are in there new lines on #3 and #4 and new caps on the rest. But I always desmog them. Gets rid of a lot of vacuum leak possibilities. I would change the petcock to a manual Pingle while there. Some folks change the slow jets out to .038's but I usually just leave the .035's in. There might be other things that need changing but you will need to get them apart to take a look.

An outfit called Red Eye is probably your best bet for a carb kit. Go to their site and look around for it, a lot have ordered from them including me. For anything that is OEM but not in the kit you need to order from ProCaliber.com They have the best prices I've found yet. http://redeye.ecrater.com/c/414983/carb-intake-seal-kitsAh hah, I see Bill beat me to it.

RedEye Is The Place For Most Carb Rebuild Parts. I Also Order The .038 Slow Jets From Jets-R-Us . Com. I Also Replace The Intake O-Rings With The Viton O-Rings From RedEye. If The Carbs Are Not Leaking They Probably Only Need A Good Cleaning And A Set Of New Slow Jets Along With Intake O-Rings, Most Of The Other Parts Are Re-Usable.

Thank you Terry, Bill, and John. Terry, as soon as I get the parts and the carbs cleaned up, you'll be seeing me for a Conestoga's run for sure. She only gets up to around 65 now and is not very happy about it. Enough to get me riding and get my skills back up to par, so when she's really ready, I should be too. After my lack of ability in reassembly, I'm going to let someone that knows their way around the carbs tackle this task, so I'm not completely familiar with the desmog and other good ideas, but clean carbs and this lady will be much happier, plus Kim will be able to ride along too.

It only gets up to 65? Sounds like something else than carbs, possibly the petcock is failing....that's a classic symptom. How does the bike idle? If it idles fine I'd look at fuel delivery to the carbs before tearing them apart. A bad petcock can work fine at low speed/RPM but not deliver enough fuel for higher RPM operation.

I had that exact thing happen to me on my 97 Standard. I was going to tackle the carb banks, but decided to try the fuel valve first, seemed to be starving for fuel. Changed it out to a Pingle valve and I was good to go.

John, it does idle fine, as it is given gas it starts to sound rough. Best description I can give is the strong acceleration isn't there and it seems like it needs more fuel. It felt like it wants to get up and go, but there just isn't anything there help. I thought it might have been down a carb or a cylinder that is how lacking it is in power. At between 35-50 it is ok, sounds rough, but it functions. The more throttle I give, the response doesn't change. When I rev the throttle there is no smoke coming out of the pipes, and the noise is an unhappy growl the higher I take the rpms, especially in a quick stab. Thank you for all the help on this, all of you guys are incredible at your knowledge of these bikes.

Try the throttle advancement as you just described, only add a little choke to it as you do it. If that makes a difference, then I'd say your slow jets might be partially clogged. If it doesn't help with a little choke, then my guess is you have a petcock problem. I'd sure look at that possibility first.

It Definitely Sounds Like The Petcock. I Just Had One Doing The Same Thing And Replaced The Petcock With A Pingel. Now It Runs Like A Raped Ape,LOL !
