Wanted to bring to your attention the need for thoughts and prayers for Brew1brew and his family.  Aside from a couple personal family matters that I will let him expound upon if he chooses, he laid his bike down recently.

He is fine for the most part and seems to be his normal self when I spoke with him, normal for him anyway.  He suffered a broken collar bone and 3? ribs in that area.  He is to go into surgery to install a plate for the collar bone sometime soon.  The bike will also need some surgery as well, with an expected medical bill of $4500 so far.

He had told me he was on 75, and turned his head to ensure his lane he was about to move into was clear, when the traffic infront of him stopped.  He was able to break, but then hi-sided away from his bike.

He asked me to share with you his incident and to keep his VRCC brothers updated.

Good luck, he's a real nice guy, we all met him at Inzane...

I don't know what got messed up on his bike, but I might end up
with some extra 2014 throttle cables and hydraulic lines soon...

Thank you Randy for getting this thread started, and thank you to all my VRCC brothers and sisters for you thoughts & prayers.  angel

I'm re-posting what I put on facebook for my non-biker friends and family;

Feeling blessed, laid the bike down on Monday on my way to work . Broke my collar bone, two ribs broken one rib fractured, hand is swollen but surprising it's not broken. Two fingers (ring and pinky) have "Mallet finger". And of course most of the right side is bruised. (note: found out this morning that the broken ribs punctured my right lung and it's 10% collapsed, the DR said it's ok that it'll heal on its own, no worries until 40% collapsed. but the anesthesiologist might not want to do the surgery. that is to put in the plate on my collar bone)

So, surgery on the 30th to put a plate on my collar bone and enjoy the new year.

I wear a full face helmet, other than having no memory of the incident my head is fine. I would not be here if I wasn't wearing it.

To all my brothers and sisters that ride with out a helmet, PLEASE RECONSIDER.

I'm glad you're more-or-less OK and sorry to hear about the bike.

I've ridden with you in traffic and know you are a good, vigilant rider.  If this can happen to you, it can happen to any of us.  Thanks for reinforcing my paranoia!

Get healed up in time for Inzane.  I'm plotting a Bun Burner 1500 route  (1500 miles in 36 hours) so you need to be ready.

Thank you Dave!  I'm glad to heighten your paranoia! But in truth, this scenario (looking over my shoulder and traffic stopping in front of me) has been, and now ALWAYS will be my greatest fear.

I don't think I'll have enough vacation left next year to my personal obligations and  make Insane  Cry but we'll see.

Dangit Les!   Hate to hear this, but glad you are mostly OK.  I look over my shoulder the same way you do.  I will continue to look.  I will just try and make sure the traffic is steady when I do look.
Same thing happened to me, But I was in the BWD truck.
Prayers for a speedy recovery bud.

So the windshield and mirror are scaped too, I didn't take a shot at them.

Thanks Jimmy, I will certainly continue to look over my Shoulder as well. I will have plenty of down time to analyze things, but I think the one thing that I can change to reduce risk is to take the commute in the cage at least 50% more. I mean the smart car at least has side & front airbags and it gets about the same MPG. Also my work is only 5 miles from the house, I don't need to get on the highway, I'm just avoiding 3 lights.

That'll buff out.  Don't change the crash guard, though - it's a badge of honor.  I have a similar flat spot on my crash bar from my crash where my collarbone was broken.

I have been close to having accidents like you described and was rear ended by someone doing what you were doing.  I now do a quick glance in the mirror and use that for the lane moves so that I keep my attention ahead.  It means I miss some easy lane changes but it has cut down on the panic braking.

Prayers continuing your way.

Wow Brew, sorry to hear about your crash! You never know do you, can happen any time any place, and life is different after that. Always wear my helmet too, and I have been lucky. Hope and pray for your complete recovery. I try not to ride in heavy traffic, will usually take the longer route, not sure how much that matters? Hope to ride with you again in the Hill Country or anywhere, maybe Cooper's BBQ again.  Get well quick  Firefighter

Hey Les,

The last time I saw you, 'THEY' were out of ribs!!  2funny

That would be Valk meeting @ 10 80 BBQ in Richardson.

I know.  A joke about ribs is about as pitiful as a 'how do you play a clavicle' joke.  Roll Eyes

But, really, I DO have empathy for you...  NOT FUN!  Glad the outcome was not any worse that what it is.  Smiley

Les,
I hope your surgeon had a nice face , talked softly, and had warm hands. No one likes getting screws from a brute.   I googled the clavicle plate and grabbed an X-ray

This looks painful . Is it similar to yours?  That is a lot of screwing. And we thought OEM Honda screws were pricey.
