Hi all,
I just had the radiator out to put a temp sensor in the top hose.
After I put it all back together,I was checking the w/shop manual
& noticed that there is a rubber flap that goes on the bottom of the radiator
that mine doesn't have.
Just wondering what it does...any thoughts?
cheers...

Guess #1-  Stops front wheel spray from splattering the front of the engine area.

Guess #2- Directs air under the bike instead of pushing the hot air of the engine up toward the rider.

#7?

It's called a heat guard rubber.  What it's guarding from heat, I couldn't tell you.

my '98 has the flap.
something like that would be designed and installed to increase airflow thru the radiator.

I've seen it on every Valk I've worked on. Guess it's for redirecting heat in some manner. The plastic shield behind the fan(#5) would be more effective in heat distribution from the radiator and fan when running.

It is to force the air flow to the radiator instead of giving air an easier way to move.  A lot of radiators use re-dirrection as opposed to size for cooling.

Also on mine, I/S & Std, that rubber is rolled into a tube and wires pass through it.

Just looked closer, That bugger is there!  Its just laying flat on top of the inside edge of the timing belts cover, even with the bottom of the radiator so Its easy to miss

At first i thought the flap kept the dirt & crap from going
behind the radiator but I think it has something to do with the
air direction.
Doesn't seem to effect the running temp which is around 80c.
cheers...

I know this is an older thread but I just noticed my rubber flap is laying out on the timing cover and I am not sure if that is where it is supposed to be as it has some cut outs in it that makes me think it goes under the rad and lays on the motor???
Anyway the photo up above is missing and Id like to know where it goes or is it ok to just remove it?

Mine touches the timing cover. I think it's normal. I wouldn't remove it. If yours is laying out over the timing cover I would tuck it under itself.

Look at this. It's # 4

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2000/GL1500CF+AC/RADIATOR/parts.html

It is a rubber sheet attached to the bottom of the Air Guide.  The frame passes through it on each side.  The end of the rubber is rolled up and the wires that pass from one side of the front of the engine to the other runs through it.  I encountered this when I put I/S Pods on my Std. and changed out the Air Guide for one for an I/S.

Needs to be re-rolled around the wires that pass through it.  Tabs need to be re-inserted in the slots.  If there is a problem with that, torn off tabs, ripped slots.....super glue it back together.
