While trying to start the valk today it would fire up and run a few seconds and quit. I did this several times with breaks in between. On the last try it did nothing. Charged and tested the battery and fuses and checked the start button and all seems ok to me. After charging the battery and testing it with a volt meter it seems good but as soon as I turn the key on the voltage drops significantly like there is a load on it, turn the key off and its back up. Long time viewer first time poster. Thanks

Do you have the voltage readings with the switch on and off?

It almost sounds like an immobilizer working. But we don't have one.

A bad battery? But then it wouldn't be able to start after cranking the starter. Also the alternator not supplying power to run after the engine starts.

Kind of confusing.

There is a drain on it when you turn the key on, its the headlight.  Sounds like your battery is/was weak.  Put a full 2A charge on it and if it does it again soon just get a new one.  also make sure the alternator is putting out at around 14V

What's the voltage with the engine running at 2500 RPM?
Are you out of gas or needing to switch to reserve?

it charges up to over 13 volts and as soon as the switch is turned on it goes to 0. almost seems like a huge load on it right away. Definitely seems like something drag it down immediately. turn the key off voltage comes up again. Can I use like a 10amp booster charger?

Sounds like new battery time.  But also check the 55A fusable link and the ground connections.  Would be nice to get a volts output reading on the alternator too

Be sure to follow the pre install battery instructions. There's a difference between a charger and a smart charger.

Start from a known good battery with jumpers, then remove. Even with a dead battery, it should run from power produced from the alt.

Damage can be done by running without a battery in the system.

Yes, if there is no battery at all. Even a bad battery should draw enough amps from the system for our purpose of finding if anything else is wrong with the system.

Go back to basics. Clean all connections and switches after checking the battery. A battery will take a charge but go to zero when a load is applied if it has a dead short internally. Usually , it is a dirty contact or connection. Unhook the ground , hook to a non-running auto battery (jump start) and give it a try. If the battery is to be replaced , re-read the above. We get many bikes in where the customer just put in a new battery and will not start. Clean the terminals on a new battery .

My guess is that your starter was internally failing (it's very common to have carbon from worn brushes contaminating the commutator). That caused the starter to draw too many amps which welded the solenoid contacts together. Now, when you turn on the key, the stuck solenoid is routing full current to the failed starter. If so, the wire to your starter should be getting warm/hot when the key is on.

You can confirm this by disconnecting the starter (at the starter side of the solenoid for convenience) and verifying that the current draw is gone when the key is turned on.  You may luck out and save the starter by disassembling it and cleaning out the gunk, then replacing the solenoid. You'll likely find that the starter needs a set of brushes. You may also find melted insulation on the big wires to the solenoid and starter.

Please remember to DISCONNECT the B- terminal before doing any of the above disconnections.

The headlight is enough load to drive the battery to zero

when you turn the key "on" if the battery is worn out.

It smacks of a bad battery.  Denial is common.

Last week, I went to jump on the Valkyrie and ride in to work.  Turned the key on, hit the starter button, heard a slight pop, then nothing.   Jumped into the BWD and drove to work.
Turned out to be corrosion on the positive battery terminal.  Cleaned it up, charged the battery all night on the 2 amp setting,  and the next morning she fired right up.

My Valkyrie shorted out the battery once, every thing went dark when the ignition was turned on.  Borrow a battery and put it in, if it works, buy a new battery.
