« on: January 05, 2015, 04:50:10 PM »

Hi folks ...just did a carb service on my 1998 f6   all seems to have gone well...only thing I notice is bike starts right up with no choke ,  but will sputter and stall if attempt to choke ...why?...temps are in the 30's maybe 55 inside garage with door open ...any advice , speculation will be appreciated ...did not vacuum fill bowls before starting ...is it possible all cyinders are not fed fuel yet ...does bike have to be level to feed all bowls ...will all bowls fill  if its leaning on kstand ?...thx

My I/S starts up and runs good with the choke on. My Standard floods easily with the choke on and doesn't run smooth with it on. I don't know why. I think every bike has its own temperament, kind of like women. Roll Eyes

I think that's pretty normal since it is an enrichment system

as opposed to a choke (air) system.

If you can get it started without the "choke" it will normally

want to stall after a brief period of time. Employing the

"choke" prior to starting will, after starting, allow the

engine to continue to run.  Why the engine wants to

stall out doing it the way the op mentioned is about vacuum

and fuel. When initially cranking, the vacuum is low, but once

running, the vacuum is high. Depending upon when you employ

the "choke" system you are flooding the engine with a high

vacuum, but at a low vacuum the mixture is "just right" for

the cold start.  Do you get it?
