I've got my forks off and ready to install OEM new fork seals.  I see from other posts that folks have installed them upside down which does not work.  The Clymer manual (page 400 #5) says "position the oil seal with the marked side facing down".  The package directions state "oil seal must be installed wite (sp?) the brand name on top".  The brand name and square notch markings are on the same side.  Those directions seem in conflict with each other.  I thought (but am now totally confused) that the seal I remove had the markings on the upper side.

Which way do the fork seals go?  Is up really down (as far as package directions) because they are inverted forks?

Thanks in advance.

Feel the seal edges on the inside of the seal where the forks go. Rub it with your fingertip sliding it one way (as the forks move in the seal) and then the other way. The sharper edges that cause drag on your fingertips point towards the oil.

I attempted to discern which edge dragged on my finger using my old seals (I have the new ones on the forks) and while I didn't feel very certain one way or the other, it seemed that would indicate the markings go down as per the Clymer manual.

I'd sure like to be certain about this so I don't have to tear it all apart again.

I think there's words on one side of the seals... I think after you have the seals installed,
you should still be able to see the words...

Good advice there Bighead.

That is why we have a camera in the shop.

Take a picture of the part you are removing.

Then refer to the picture when putting it back together.

One edge has a chamfer which might suggest that is the end that gets pressed in.  Nope!  The opposite side with the 90 % edge gets pressed into the upper tube, the chamfered edge will be pointing downwards...outwards.

Thanks for responses and just to wrap this up in case someone has cause to figure this out in the future.

Based on the useful responses I received and info in the VTX fork seals video  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HruibpkMkEU), the seals go on Valkyrie forks with the marks facing down, or away from the oil.  Thus, making the directions supplied with the seals incorrect for inverted forks.

Divot, you've got it right. The marks on the seal go toward the axle or down. Just did that job about two weeks ago.
