Hello.
Yesterday I took the bike  out to the Oregon coast and she gave me a new to me problem or problems?
When I stop an turn off the engine, she won't start again. I read some where on here that it could be the starter switch so I turn the switch on and off a couple times and she start right up. However, during the ride she randomly die then turn back on and ran like nothing happened. Are these two problem related?
Thanks for your help . Sad

Sounds like it might be an intermittent Engine Kill Switch.

Naw.  I think it's your key switch.

The bike shutting off is the clue.

First, let's get some terminology straight:

Engine kill switch - the rocker switch at the right hand grip.
Engine start button - momentary pushbutton at the right hand grip.
Ignition switch - operated by the key.
Starter relay - the relay that is triggered by the start button, located behind the right side cover.

When you say it didn't start, do you mean you
A. push the start button and the headlight goes off, but nothing else happens,
B. push the start button and the headlight goes off and you hear a click or series of clicks (almost a buzz) behind the right side cover, but nothing else happens, or
C. push the start button and the headlight goes off and the starter motor spins the engine, but the engine doesn't start?

If A, when this happens, do the turn signals, brake light, and the horn also not work?

Hi gryphon rider, I push the orange rocker button on top of the right handle bar. I think it is call the kill switch. And was so happy that she started right up that I didn't check on head light or horn. Does the head light turn on or off. Or the horn still work or not would tell what part or parts that is malfunctioning.

Light turns off when the push start button is pushed, to allow more power for turning and firing the engine.

Yes. What is working will direct others to better diagnose your problem.

I never flip the kill switch only turn the ignition switch off with the key and after 17. Years and 100k plus miles no problems.

Yes.I never use the kill switch either until this happened. I turn the bike off using the key. The kill switch on/off  was what I thought I read on here. I could be wrong.

I'm with Ricky-D on this one.   Ignition switch.

I'd take the switch lose from the frame and turn it around so as to see the back.

Wiggle all the wires.  Does one move a little bit?

If so, tightened it up.   Do the same with the rest of the wires.

On my of my long trips out West many moons ago, MGM pulled that stunt on me.

I messed with it along side the road for about an hour checking for loose wires. Hoping I'd not flatten the battery as it would turn over.   Figured if I had to, I could jump start it and then come back and put my trailer back on. Not a vehicle came by, yup, I was on Hwy 50, the loneliest road in the US of A.

Found one in the switch (key) loose and secured it till I could get to the Motel.  Then took it off and did a through check with it.     I found one other one question-ally loose.  It has never failed again on me, except when I fried the starter relay cause stupid me did not install a relay when I put on the Cobra light bar.   It has a relay now and it works just fine.

Everything on MGM has a relay on it now.

Let us know what you find.

Have a good day and a good weekend.

Juet clean the contacts on the kill switch. Take it apart, spray some contact cleaner on it turn on and off several times and spray again. Then add some dielectric grease and put back together. No need to make things more complicated unless you have to. My headlight did this last year. Turned the bright switch on and it went dark. Flipped the switch several times and all was good til igot back home to clean it

The reason why I asked about the horn, signals, and brake light is that they are on the same circuit as the starter and ignition in the ignition (key) switch (at least on the Standard/Tourer; I haven't checked the IS schematic).

It seems that if exercising the kill switch fixed the problem, then that switch is probably the problem.  You may also be having trouble with the ignition switch.  If the bike won't start like before, toot the horn.  If the horn works but the starter doesn't even try (no clicks; no engine turning), chances are the ignition switch is good but you're having other troubles such as the kill switch, the starter relay, side stand switch, or a bad connection somewhere.

Went down to the barn and start her up and she start right up (with choke on). The head light dim when I push the start button. I will look around the key area. The Dieing then Start again while on the road worried me. Will tear into the switch and clean it up when it get warmer. Thanks for all the help.

Especially the ground strap that goes to the aluminum engine.

It might look clean, but take it off and make sure.

Don't ask how I know that.    It cost me a couple of days of jump starting MGM.

That was a bitch, take trailer off, get it started, put trailer back on and firk with the cables to get the trailer lights working.
