it's happened 2 times in the last 2 days.
out for a ride, stop for a while and ready to go again and it won't start.
light is on, dash indicators are on too.
kick stand up, won't start in neutral or in gear with the clutch engaged.
put kick stand up and down a couple times in case that was the problem.
even had trouble getting it into neutral a time or two.
hit the start button and ......nothing nada, zilch.
after a few minutes it finally got all the stars in the universe lined up and it worked.
any ideas if this has happened to you

looks like this post happened two times too.  Have you ever cleaned the starter switch?  That would be the #1 suspect if you haven't.

I agree with Jeff...my '03 standard does that every once in a while. If I work the switch about 10 times with the key off it must kinda clean the contacts off a little and then it will start. This seems to only last a few times though. Reminds me I need to take mine apart and clean it!

Next item to check is the ground cable from the battery to the aluminum body of the engine.

Take the cable off and clean the 2 connecting parts real good.

That should cure your no start issue with the cleaning of the switch also.

When this happens, check to see if the headlights come on with the key switch. If not, it's the starter button. You can take it apart and clean it but what I've found is not the fact that it's dirty but it's not making good contact. There's two parts to the switch housing - one is black, the other is white. There are 4 tabs on the black part of the switch that snap into place in the white part. If, after cleaning, all 4 of the tabs are not snapped into place correctly, the contacts inside the switch will not touch.

even if you have the body of the switch put back together correctly the contacts may STILL not be making contact if the brass bouncy button thing isint "bouncy"  Even on brand new switches that contact that rides on the spring can be too tight inside its little slot.  If it doesn't move up and down freely when you press on it, it will eventually be mashed down to where its no longer making contact.

Also, the dirt may have caused excessive heat which might have melted some surrounding plastic causing the contact to be covered
