My 01 1500 I/S fuel gauge starts to flash when I've used 5.5 gallons. I switch to reserve, which should still have 1 gallon but the gauge continues to flash which I find very annoying. Is this normal for the warnig flash to continue? I'm getting 40 mpg on regular and would like to ride on reserve without the constant flashing and top up down the road.

It's going to flash until you put more gas in. (Or your battery dies)

The warning flash does come on too early, and IS irritating.
Do not switch to reserve until the motor stumbles, that way you know you have 1.1 gal left +/- (30-40 miles). I've had the flash start and stop a few times before it says on. Motor stumble to reserve is more accurate than the flashing led.
Though filing with a high speed pump mixes stuff up pretty good, realize running down near the bottom of reserve could suck some nasty crud into the carbs (maybe far from home).
I tend to get gas at the flashing led, before the motor stumbles (you have to stop sometime). Usually only hit reserve on superslab trips, and have had some tense moments on the PA turnpike when it can be a long way to the next exit or turnpike gas station.

Mine gets down to the very last bar BEFORE it commences flashing. And waiting til the engine stumbles makes sure of WHEN you go to reserve. And according to Daniel Meyer tech sessions running in reserve soon after a fill up helps keep the lower part-reserve-of the dip leg clean so when you actually do go to reserve it will pull the fuel from the reserve part of the dip leg. After a fill up I try to run 30-40 miles in reserve. DO NOT run out and find out you are ALREADY in reserve. Sticky wicket that! RIDE SAFE.

As long as you don't forget to turn fuel knob back to on when you fill up! If you think your setting the world record for gas mileage better check and make sure the fuel selector is not still on reserve. Don't even ask why I mention this. Firefighter

I don't think the IS led bars are all that accurate. I almost always get more miles out of the top half than the bottom half. I can have one bar, then be back at three, then shortly to two, then back to one. Still, it's a decent indicator.
I still reset a trip meter at every fill-up. 220 to reserve (give or take a few miles) on both bikes is very consistent for me. Unless I'm running at 85 constant, which I rarely do because I hate BIG performance awards (and they can take you to jail in VA over 80.... even in a 70). They probably wouldn't, but it would really suck if they did. (The only visits to jail I've ever had were to see other people being held there. It's not that much fun even then.)

To avoid tank bottom sludge I run the bike all day on reserve each payday (two weeks) to keep the reserve area clean. Just sayin. Fred.

You do know there is no "reserve area" you are just using a different hole in the fuel feed post right. The gas does get sloshed around so its not like a puddle of gas is laying around in that "reserve area" not being used if you don't turn the switch.

I totally agree with Chris. There is no special area in the tank for gas being held as reserve.

I have never had my I/S blink at me, though only been to 1 bar once or three times. Not many pumps where I ride, to like to fill up when I get to 180/190 miles or any place in between. Some places don't have cell service and hate walking that far.
