Had an idle problem that was solved by new plugs on the nipples on the carbs, but on a test drive, got 1/2 mile from home and engine died as if it ran out of fuel, died gradually. Now it will not fire at all. Moved the fuel dial to reserve and back. Not sure if it might be a petcock problem, loss of vacuum to the petcock? Don't know where to look. Help?

Why did you not leave the selector on RES?  If you know you have gas, you might have kinked the vent hose if you had to remove the gas tank in our previous work.

OEM petcock is vacuum operated so make sure the vacuum line on the petcock is connected to carb # 6. If you open the gas cap and she runs, it is a venting problem.

Sounds like when you were plugging carb nipples, your removed the petcock vacuum line on number 6 and plugged it too. Got to have that line in order for the petcock to function as designed.   Undecided  Follow Chris and Crackerborn's advice.

Ahh, found vacuum 2 vacuum line broken off on the smog nipples on the carbs. Put new plugs on all, solved the idle problem.

you might want to go and put the vacuum lines back where they belong and not plugs and hook up the petcock back to # 6 carb. I don't believe you can cap the remaining 5 unless you do a de-smog .

You can cap them but you also have to kink all the hoses. But yes, as Dennis said, make sure that line is on #6 carb going to petcock if you have an OEM petcock.

You are referring to capping the nipples, and then kinking the hoses, as in plugging them?

I also think if some vacuum lines have broken/leaking, then others also might be. Now that you have messed with some, others have been disturbed and broken/leaking, including the specified #6 which feeds a vacuum to the petcock which allows it to open and fee fuel to the carbs.

How did the engine die, gradually, one carb at a time, till it stopped?

Thank you all for the replies. Yes, I would have uncapped number 6 and will put it back. I didn't remove the tank so shouldn't be anything kinked. The original hoses are all pretty deteriorated and I left them laying on top of the heads. I have read about DeSmog but have not as of yet done that. It definitely "ran out of gas" so the vacuum missing to the pet rooster sounds like my 1st move.  Until I DeSmog should I plug the other lines? And, once I reconnect #6 how do I get fuel enough to the carbs to restart to get vacuum to release fuel from the pet rooster? As for my location SW Florida, Sarasota. Thanks again all for the help, I was a frustrated puppy yesterday

If the vacuum hoses are as deteriorated as bad as you say you will be hard pressed to plug them without vacuum leaks. Try putting the hose on your petcock and sucking on the other end to get fuel to the carbs. Should only take a few seconds. Then hook it up to #6 carb and start it. If you get a mouth full of gas you need to rebuild the petcock. Hope you dont get gas in your mouth though.

All you have to do is change all the vacuum lines and that should fix all your problems. It you feel you need help i'm sure someone in the Florida Chapter will help you if you ask. Hope this helps you out.

Some of the OEM vacuum lines (besides the one for the  petcock) that you removed were on the nipples at carbs three and four. Those lines were attached to the PAIR emission system and will need to be replaced also for your bike to run correctly. If you decide to desmog the bike, only the line to carb six will be required. I'm assuming your working with a non-California bike. By the way Rich at Redeye  has the lines if you go that way and desmog kits if you want to eliminate them.

Hi Donncat go to the bottom of the page and click on the link to the Florida board.  Post on there if you need more help.  There are several members in your area here in Florida.

Thanks again, gang. Plugged in No 6 and started as advertised. Smooth idle and all. Going the desmog route this weekend while doing a few other tidying up. Installing my Rifle windshield and opening up the pipes a bit. Didn't see a link to the Fl chapter but would like to catch on with them so if you can make it obvious where for me to click I will seek them out. Appreciate the help once again. See ya next time.

On the bottom of this page is a rectangle that says jump to.  In the box click on the arrow and a drop down box will show the different chapters.  Click on the Florida Chapter.  I save that page as my home page so it comes up when I turn the computer on in the morning.

There are several that live in your area.  Go to the Florida section for information on rides.  Often we meet at US 41 and US 54 (McDonalds) and then ride north around North of the greeting location.  There are a few rides south of Tampa bay as well.  Most rides are heading to a lunch stop selected by someone looking for fellow riders.  And if you have friends that are not fortunate to own a Valkyrie they are also welcome.

Good luck on the desmog, check back should you need further help.

Looking forward to meeting you, I'll be on the Yellow Valk.
