I have put lots of songs on my Iway 500 in the past. Today when I went to put more songs on it, I couldnt. It says something like "The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk". I went into properties, then clicked on the share tab, then on advanced sharing. I next clicked on the permissions button and only the read box was checked. I then clicked on the full control box but I still cant write to the iway. I think I have read every link in google on how to remove the write protection and tried most of them with no luck.

I hope I dont have to do the last resort and reformat the hard drive. If I do, will it get rid of map part of the gps?

I wonder how the write protection came about..... hmmmmm Undecided

Any suggestions?

I loved my IWay 500C but Lowrance stopped supporting it years ago. Threw it away in '11 when it wouldn't do anything anymore. Bought a Garmin 665 and love it. Sorry.

There is room for a few more thousand songs. I have only used up 2 of the 10 gigs. I tried a soft reset last night. I was going to do a HARD reset, but when I started it said a hard reset will loose EVERYTHING. I thought I may loose the map. I just read "A hard drive contains highly detailed road and highway mapping data for Hawaii, the 48 contiguous United States and most of Canada. You can't change or erase the map." So I am now going to do a hard reset.

Just did a hard reset, it erased the address book but none of the music. I tried it multiple times. Every time I rebooted the gps, I tried to add a song and it still says write protected....   Embarrassed

Any suggestions????

Have you recently changed/upgraded PCs?
I "used" to use a Lowrance Iway 600C that functioned very well with pre-planned rides.
It was easy to upload gpx files.
After upgrading to a newer PC with Windows 7, low and behold ... I got the write protection problem. After fighting with this for a while, I decided to try it on my old PC.... and ... it worked flawlessly without any write protection.
I eventually got fed up with this, broke down and purchased a Garmin Nuvi 2797. Life is good! cooldude

I should have posted this about an hour ago. I got it to work. I pulled out the old xp machine out of the closet and I can put music on the gps.  I have been so busy putting music on it I forgot to post the problem was solved. Thank to all who posted.
