Shortly after the race was over we headed out down I95 a couple exits and came up rt. 1 as we approached the rt. 206 light she just stopped running, luckily i coasted her into a used car lot, as i was trying to get the neutral light to come on i noticed it was barely glowing, batt dead, now i remember last couple rides she had the diming/ blinky lights as she idled.so I let her sit 5 min. and lights then came on bright even got her to crank a few times and click/click/click, dead batt. again, o.k. call friend come get us, go home hook up the trailer that just this morning i put the plate i transfered last wednesday from the old boat trailer, (sold boat last week) and cleaned trailer of mold and put her into gated storage. So back home by 8. as far as break downs go we got very lucky. and will order new GL 1500 alt. here shortly.

Make sure all your connections are tight... Sounds more like a bad connection.. Put a charger on the battery and check voltage when running...

o.k. i will check connections, forgot to add that by the time i got back to her with the trailer she fired right up and i drove her onto trailer no problem.

Most likely is the alternator but check the 55A charge fuse under the plastic cover next to the row of small fuses and the screw connections on the fuse and the cables. Sounds like you were pretty lucky on the location.

Mike my alternator went out at 47000 they were a weak point on the 1500 engines. I was on a ride yesterday and started to smell oil. Upon checking I find the left side lower parts of engine and pipes with oil on them. I got it home ok. I am thinking shifter seal. Will dig into it this evening. Hope the seal is readily available since I think all 1500's used the same seal.

Mike, it's a real drag and a sinking feeling when you suddenly realize that you are going to spend more time on the road and it won't be riding time.
You were fortunate to have somewhere to pull off, and that there was a safe area to work. Hope it's an easy fix.

Does sound like the alternator, but what if it only needs brushes. $5 vs $250.............

Sorry to hear Mike. Get a Volt meter on it and check the connections like suggested before.
Keep us posted, hopefully it will be an easy fix.

get the old one rebuilt for a spare & quick change if ever needed. got ours done in S Daytona [on Rt. 1] for 100.00, but that was yrs ago. nice guy and it's all they do there. glad you got home safe.

I will either rebuild or have a pro fix the old one to keep as a spare,. Chris any links to the brushes and maybe a how to , for trouble shooting the old one ? Jeff, you are not kidding about that feeling you get when stranded, hasn't. Happened to me in a long time. I was kinda embarassed as the Harleys stopped at the light and glanced over my perdicament, only cuz we boast so much our dependability, but even great machines fail on occasion. I will keep posting as repairs are made.

If the alternator has much over 50K miles with never a new set of brushes, then Id suspect that's the problem, especially since it seemed to partially fail once before that. Order the brushes from HDL they are cheap, and the Honda book shows how to install. I have done 3 or 4 of them and its easy soldering, just takes a little time get the holes cleaned up and everything fed through

for your sift shaft seal ,If they say they dont have it ,ask for an 1800. the 1800 uses the same seal size but it has a different part number. So anyhow the 1800 seal will work for you .

Success, new alternator in and charging. Old one did not charge while running and connections where tight, fuse was good. Removal wasn't to bad, I found it easier to find and remove the wires after it was free of the motor housing, eliminating step one from the helpful link. A zip tie was being used to keep my white plug in as someone has been in here before and broke the little tab on the plug. Not wanting to reuse that i traced that wire to it's other end in front of battery box and unplugged, new wire will plug and play, new wire does have a resistor for noise reduction if using CB or radio on an I/S, it is mounted to the back of new alt. I remembered reading this was not needed on my standard, just searched and found Terry's quote: "The terminal & plastic insulator are different where you connect the alternator battery wire. You have to take off the capacitor that is mounted on the Gold Wing alternator and rotate the front housing to match the holes from the Valkyrie model so that it will fit." Capacitor it is then.The re clocking was simple except those 3 Phillips head screws are way to tight, had to eat some Wheaties to get them loose. the terminal was swapped and i was ready t install. Before  After, but before capacitor was removed  old alt, old wire, the removed and swapped terminal post.  Getting her back in is a trick and will require a little prying to get to this point  But once there you have already taught those dampeners and fins to love each other. Geez, that is where the most patience is needed. Hey nobody told me the battery box is not intended to ever be removed ? Is it possible ? I don't know.  You know she got her shine on too, wheels and all.   Background art, My wife got me last Christmas.   Just makes me smile to shine this area.       Seen enough yet ? Thanks for watching.

Thanks, 41,105 miles on this 2001. Kind of ironic is i bought her day of Daytona 500 one year ago, 31, 100 miles, this years Daytona 500 this happens, keeping her in next year. I think she has been feeling slightly neglected since her gorgeous girlfriend Teal showed up.

Teal will go if she is ready and i trust she is good to go, I still have lots to do on her, tires, valve stems, fork oil, rear service, gauge bulbs, all wheel bearings, desmog, air filter, but my goal is to get her done by then. We shall see. Maybe one day soon you can give up your day job.  Post some pics of the brushes on the old alternator..........I would be nice if that's all it needs, then you have a good spare.
