Finally going to do it.  I picked up a set of I/S pods a few years back.  I feel lucky because I got both sets of radiator brackets and the I/S crash bars.  Just last week a Hoppe fairing arrived in the mail cooldude.  So, got to take the plastic pieces to a painter.  In the mean time, I need to order the "Air Guide Plate" for an I/S.

OK.  Those who have done this mod., what is the best/easiest (if that is possible) way to get the Air Guide that is in there out and the new one in?  I think I remember reading that it can be a hell of a challenge.  I suppose the tank has to come off. Roll Eyes

TIA, Steve

I don't think you can change that piece without removing the carbs, so, I would assume your going to have to remove the tank, airbox and at least unbolt the intakes and see if you can move the carbs back away from the plate. I remember removing the plate when I had my carbs off the bike.
Good luck.

The "remove the tank" remark was in reference to what Daniel Meyer said recently...that the tank has to come off to do anything on a Valk.

But, it doesn't surprise my that the tank will have to come off.  That's one job I truly hate! tickedoff  The first time I took the tank off my I/S, my hands hurt for 2 weeks.  At least it will allow me to look at the air filter and install a quick disconnect for the fuel line that I have had for several months.  Decided it will go on the first bike that has to have the tank removed...then I'll order another one.

Your stock one will pop out with a little effort. Installing the I/S baffle is a bit of a struggle. I did mine with the carb bank in place and only removed the tank & air box.
A couple of 1.5" plastic putty knives will assist in helping it by the carbs & rack bolts/nuts. A fair amount of patience and coaxing helps. I do not believe it's any easier by pulling the radiator & upper hose. I've done it several times and prefer going in from above. Don't even think of trimming it down to make it easier. If you do that you might as well leave the Std/Tour type in there. You need it to direct the flow out of the pods.

I slit the rubber drape around the guard mounts and rejoined with inner tube patches. I wanted full use as it was designed. My money is on Honda inserts that damn thing before installing the engine. I can't see them struggling like that in a production line.

You'll be amazed at the improved airflow control.

Have Fun!!!

My wife rides the Std.  It had been some time since I had ridden it and forgot how much heat the rider gets from the radiator.  I ride the I/S and have air deflectors on the forks, windshield, pods and the Bakers, so I have a great air management system in place on that bike.  Hopefully, installing the pods will be a big improvement.
Thanks for the tips.
