I have a 2000 Valkyrie with 41,000 miles. On second ride of the season, after stopping awhile, the bike would not start. Got the clunk sound from the relay, but no start. Press start button a couple times and it fires up and runs. BUT, the headlight stays off, all the time. Have been searching for possible problems and solutions but haven't found anything quite like this. I know the headlight is wired through the starter switch, so I wonder if it's the switch itself....needs cleaned maybe?
Any ideas are appreciated,
Ken

Take it apart and clean it and make sure contacts are actually making contact. Very common problem. Also if you tap the switch a couple times after it starts the light will come on or at least mine did.

I received a tip from a longtime Valk rider to always have lights on low beam when starting. Had to do with amp draw and burning up the starter switch.

Would like to know if that's really true. ??? The wife and I ride 99.5% in the daytime and always with the brights and light bars on. We never switch to dim...

The start button turns off the headlights when starting. The Interstate doesn't even put headlight power through the start button, but uses relays instead. If you are using a higher wattage bulb in your headlight, it might be a good idea to install a relay for the headlight to reduce power through the start button.

Try spraying liberally contact cleaner / lubricant into the crevices surrounding the switch button while vigorously operating the start button & I'd do it to all the switches while I was at it.
Works for me.

once you take that switch apart you will know theres no way to get spray from outside the housing into that little connector box, and if the contacts aren't working spray is not going to fix it
