Tavares, Florida is host to what has become the second largest get-together of antique wooden boats in the US. The only other and larger venue is up in upstate New York.
So, downtown Tavares, on Lake Dora, this weekend is host to an amazing display of hundreds of restored classic and antique boats, hydros, vintage race boats, picnic cruisers, boat tailed Chris-Crafts.....you get the idea. Tavares is also a Seaplane base so there's plenty to see.
If you have never taken the time to see something like this, please do!

Yes, been there in the past, really something to see. Love the old classics and those inboards on some of them sound great.....like a hot rod at a stoplight.  cooldude

Am thinking I will either bring my little Model R with a 25 on it or bring the Model K 16' with an older opposed 4-cylinder on it. Neither is show quality, just good looking and functional restos.

I first have to appoligise for not locating you for a visit . The mrs and I walked pretty much around the whole place but didnt go out on the docks.

WOW is about all I can say . So many beautiful boats . I can only imagine how many gallons of varnish or urethane or whatever they use now days to put a finish on those wooden gems. Then there were the young guys racing there 9.9s . The Amphicars that never seemed to end once they started parading up the boat er uhm the car ramp LOL .  Then as I was looking at the Woody wagon display and looking down the tracks I see a steam engine. I was going that direction but it backed away before I got to it.

Anyhow I missed finding you but sure had an enjoyable day .  Thanks to all the folks who had there wonderful toys out for display .

I did get to see Tundra there today for a bit. I had my orders to take Lesa for a nice long boat ride so we idled the little model R Alumacraft around the inboard docks and drooled over the millions and millions of dollars worth of restored classics. We then made our way down to the calm end of the lake and rode around a  bit down there.
Once we came back, I put the boat up on the grass and we switched boats and went out with Steve Wood in his beautiful little classic dory style hull with a 1915 single cylinder Evinrude "Row Boat" motor on it. The engine never missed a beat, pushed the boat with authority, and looked as good as it ran.

Very nice day Pappy, those boats left me speechless. The Paradise diner you recommended was great. We had heavy traffic on the ride home... a smidge over 3 hours.

Couple of interesting boats.
The Evinrude Lark boat belongs to a gal that owns a ton of properties over around Crystal River up into the Suwanee area. She loves antique outboards. A couple years ago, with pretty much old magazine ads and a few photos she had that boat re-created from scratch. Pretty amazing hull since every piece except the engine and some rigging is one-off pieces.
The seafoam green hull has been in the show for a few years. The twin Mercs on the back are actually modern engines with the old style cowls adapted onto the modern mid-sections. Amazing workmanship in both of these boats.
The "Art-Deco" look of the 50's (and very early 60's) boats and engines is hard to beat in my book.

Wow some really impressive boats.  I will have to try to make that next year.
I didn't have enough time this year.
