Coolant Capacity???

I just drained and flushed, (ran a few quarts of water thru), the radiator on my Valkyrie. The manual says 3.9 quarts in the radiator and 1.1 quarts in the reserve for a total cap of 5 quarts if my math is correct. However I only got maybe 3 quarts in the radiator and probably less than a quart in the reserve, but all is full...... and I still have a bit left in the 1 gal container?
Any ideas...? I ran it for about 5 minutes and added a bit to the rad, and capped her off and took a spin up the street, no problems noted.
Its a 1998 Valk Standard.

Yes, same here. I think the volume quoted in the book is after an engine dismantle. You cannot get it all out just by draining..........that's my story and Im sticking to it

You flushed with water? Tap water or distilled water? If tap water, You left some calcium in the system. You might want to drain it again and flush 2-3 times with distilled (purified or deionized) and then refill with premix or a 50/50 mix of concentrate and more distilled H2O.

Hey Sandy,
Yep did all that, I bought two gallons of the Honda pre-mix cause I thought I needed 5 quarts. Well on the bright side I can flush out my Shadow too!

Me too. I only got 3.5 qts back in including the res. tank..... Weird cause the link
http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/carlcoolant.htm
is in reference to a standing coolant change not a dry fill. Now I have to keep track of the extra quart for 2 more years!!

I got the unmixed anti freeze and I didn't use half a gallon. Rarely can you get all of a fluid out of a bike. I don't really worry about that. If it's full and burped then check it in a few days, if it's still full then it's full.

I picked up some engine ice from the dealer. Going to flush out and add this. It says not to add any water at all, must run straight. Question is after I flush, should I uses compressed air to blow out the system or would that cause damage. Thanks
