So my original speedometer cable just gave out – 34K – and I've ordered a replacement but I just wonder if there's an opinion which is the best lubrication for that cable?  Thanks.

I think the Hondaline ones come pre-lubed.  I think mine was.

I've used a white lithium based lube for speedos. I agree with Father that new cable may come pre-lubed.

Mine came pre-lubed. Voice of experience: "Check your speedometer gear box on the front wheel to make sure it's the cable, not the gear box."

As I recall the manual calls for 30 wt. motor oil.

Yeah, the first thing I did is verify that the gearbox and the speedo are okay – the cable broke about halfway up.  I was wondering why of course, but I guess 17 years and 35,000 miles is a reasonable lifespan for it.  Hopefully once the new cable is in there and correctly lubed, I'll have many miles of good service ahead.

the only manuals I have are the owners manual and the Clymers, And neither one says anything about Lubing the Speedometer cable. I hope the cable I'm getting is prelubed – that makes sense to me – but I'll have to see what I end up with.

I've gone away from oiling the cable.  I coat it with graphite on installation.

The service manual tells us to attach the cable to the speedometer gearbox. That is following the replacement of the front wheel not replacement of the speedometer cable.

NAPA sells a speedometer cable lube.

It's about a 30 viscosity oil loaded up with graphite.

So I got my new cable today and installed it.  It's not OEM but had a bit of prelube on it.  Works fine and hopefully won't give out for a few thousand revolutions...we'll see  crazy2
