first hello I am new to your forum.

so... I am thinking about selling off my VTX and making the move to a Valkyrie Interstate, or maybe a gold wing....
there is an 99 green two tone here in town I test rode and the foot placement would take some getting use too, she also has 88000 miles on her but is in very good shape, the private party is asking 5900.00.... I have not rode a gold wing yet...

so any one out there that would like to give me any more insight if you own one or the other? I would also Like to pull my trailer with it... right now I pull with my VTX

and is that too many miles for the price? I have heard they will go 200+ if maintained.
 any input will help

Thanks everyone

and she is the twin to yours LOL same green paint Smiley looks good.
they didn't wash or try to clean it up at all..... the front forks are leaking, but I would fix that. it appeared to run very well, but it took a min for it to warm up... from what I have been able to find that is some what normal...
is there any thing I should look into more before buying? what should the v 6 sound like?

Keep in mind I have been riding a VTX 1300 single pin crank and the sound is nothing like the Valk Smiley

Thanks again

If it doesn't have hiway pegs on it already, you'll find that there's all kind of
peg arrangements that will make you comfortable and you'll end up with several
places to move your feet around and stay comfortable on long trips...

I sat on a goldwing today... a whole lotta dashboard there   uglystupid2

I am not much of a mechanic but you could and  should hear clicking of valves when in neutral and idling. This is normal behavior
She shift clunks between first and second, normal
And she is a blast between 3rd and 4th and 4th and 5th in the 4500 to 5000 rpm range, she really pulls and that should convince you.
You have a good deal at the price you mention, she is just breaking in.  Mine is a 2001 Standard with 72000 miles and runs like a charm.
I put 5400 miles on her on my vacation to Colorado in July with passenger and trailer.
As you know you are dealing with six carbs so have her timed, check drive shaft for wear and rust.  Should be checked every 10000 milles or when chngingtires.
There is a great tech board which can answer your questions better than I

nice,
thanks, that is the info I was hoping to get... I did hear some clanking when sitting in neutral, but i didn't want to lead anyones answers. so I am glad to hear that is normal. It does have highway pegs and some after market pegs.  i didnt check the CB for operation, but the FM radio worked fine, and about anything else I checked... it pulled good in the higher RPMS but the clutch seamed to have alot of initial travel before taking off from a stop. (didnt feel any slippage) I chalked alot of that up to not being useto the bike, and the difrances from a vtx

great info guys,

Are you sure you were not in second or third gear.  If you make fast stops you will have to feel more for neutral and first and you MAY think you are in first gear.
The bike has great torque, my mechanic can get her moving from a dead start in 5th gear but do not make a habit of this.
I often start in second if the wheels are just ever slightly rolling (like at a STOP)
Also the timing belt should be changed at about 60,000 miles, they can dry out. I would not attempt to do this on my own unless you are an experienced mechanic
Has the bike been sitting round and not used for a long period of time?

I know it was in 1st, but I might not have been getting on it a whole lot where I wasnt use to the bike yet.... so I could just be operator error for the first bit. I know after a few min longer riding it I would feel more at home.

as far as I know it hasn't been sitting very long... but who knows before the guy took it into the shop to sell on consignment. I will make sure to have them ask about the trimming belt when I go back in.

Sheesh.... for that price you could almost sell it off in parts and make more money.  But... get her, clean her up and ride her...  Keep the VTX if you can cause you know as well as I the market is flooded with em now anyhow and you probably like it as well.

one more question for now... the cb, there is controls for it on the handle bar..... but If I rememeber right there is just the one antenna on the right side... all the pictures i see have one on each side and the left looks like a CB antenna... is there something I need to look at to make sure it is all there? can you use it with out a helmet? or do you need the intercom system? also if they dont have the helmet set up with the bike how hard it that to find?

thanks again

TERRIBLE PRICE AND HORRIBLE BIKE!   Forget the Valk and buy the Goldwing!

In the meantime; could you please forward me the name, phone number, and location of the seller of the Interstate ASAP? And, keep it to yourself?  Evil

It's a no brainer my friend. . .  and you will never regret owning what most of us consider the greatest cruiser of all time! Many of the folks here have gone through numerous bikes over the years from Wings to Harleys, with an assortment of Yamahas and Kaws mixed in. . .  and we all now ride Valks. I like Goldwings and 'may' someday (soon) have one, but I will NEVER sell my Valk.

The CB is an option, likely don't have it if single antenna, check under the trunk, should be there.  Hoser

If the CB has been installed you will have 2 antenna and the unit itself will be under the trunk. You should be able to see the unit if you squat down behind the bike. The intercom system, like the radio, comes with the bike ... the CB is the add on. As for using with a helmet .... you will need to buy headsets for whatever type of helmet you wish and there are several headset manufactures. Once plugged in, just switch the radio and CB off the external speakers and you are good to go. Keep in mind that the radio/aux will cut out whenever you are receiving on the CB. To get a better understanding of how the radio/CB/Intercom works be sure that there is an owners manual.

Hope that helps.

All I can say is if you test rode a Valk and you still want to go on a wing something is wrong.

THat is one good price for an Interstate, providing that regular maintenance has been done especially inspecting and lubing the rear end drive.

The Valk's flat six engine will last a long time.

My only complaint would be the foot placement....    I found it to be a task to get my big foot above the shifter to down shift. But I'm sure linkage could be ajusted. Maybe. And I have never road a wing Smiley but I have heard the pegs are about the same.

Thats a GREAT deal for an IS with those miles if all the driveline is in good shape. I have a 99 tourerized standard that just rolled 40k on sunday and love it. I also ride the Dark side ( auto rear tire ) and will never run a bike rear tire on my Valk again.

The foot placement on a Goldwing would pretty much be the same. I do know that there are heal/toe shifter kits out there and I have also seen kits that move the shifter forwards.

Get peg lowering kit from Rattlebars, then move the shifter down one notch.  Now there is room above the shift lever for big feet!

Shifting will not be a problem. I have 15 ew feet and have no problem. The bike may have aftermarket pegs and some of them can cause shifting issues. There are many alternitives available to cure them. The Valk is quite different internally (Square cut gears, lifters, Cams, six carbs ECT) than a goldwing and will ride and handle completely different. I have owned both and when I got the Valk I said "This is the bike I have wanted for 30 years" You will not be disapointed if you buy either Wing or Valk, but the Valk has what it takes to make me smile cooldude

I  stole my I/S from a guy in need of some quick cash. I bought it 4 yrs ago for $4500 (he set the price)It had been rode hard and put up wet many times before I got it. I cleaned it up caught the maintance up on it and started enjoying.  It had 59K when purchased now  it's four years later and 49 thousand more miles and still kicking like the day it was made.  If you buy it you'll love it.
