Hi all, new this forum. I've a 1999 Valkyrie tourer with 31k miles . Just replaced drive shaft and pinion with clips etc as it clunked etc .Before this job I  noticed a squealing noise from the front end It happens after about 10 miles when bike warms up, more noticeable steepen 45 and 55. Thought the job on the shaft might have sorted it but no. Sounds like a bearing tearing etc. hope you can help

Jack up the front end, or remove the front wheel and check your bearings.

What do your front brake pads look like?

When you say from the front end.   Define what area of the bike you are referring to please.

If it is wheel front end, I'd say it was a front wheel bearing that has gone South.

Thanks guys. Brake pads are fine, it's hard to pinpoint where exactly noise is but I best guess is its engine. Being on a trip at the moment and reading here about timing tensioner issues has got me concerned for sure as I've done about 600 miles this week and 200 mile to get home. Performance of bike is flawless. It reminds me of a turbo whistle  with a slight tearing sound on acceleration . If overtight tensioner is the problem , is a broken belt the end result?

Lube the speedo cable.

Lubed the speedo cable prior to drive shaft replacement as I thought it was that too.

So the sound increases with the ENGINE not the bike speed?

That's a horse of a different color.

Sounds like it could be a timing belt tensioner.

You can remove the cover after you get it warmed up and the noise starts and you'll be able to tell pretty easily.

The key was the speed 45-55 or so.  Its normal, they all do it, get louder pipes or just get over it.  Talked about in ShopTalk.  Some say Synthetic Oil lessens the sound, Im not sure.

On second thought you should just pull the cover, start the engine and see if you can hear anything wrong.  I wouldn't ride the bike much until I found the problem.

You could loosen the belts enough to check how the tensioner bearings are feeling.  If you suspect one isn't right, you can remove and replace.

Just be careful you don't let the belt slip a notch on the pulleys.

You thinking it's just the regular Valk gear howl?

Don't think it's a regular gear howl. Last Valkyrie I had didn't make this noise, however it had smaller screen and this one is the CT with larger screen . Will get it to shop in the morning and get the timing area checked out first. Will report back hopefully with a good result .

Chris could be right, one of my bikes is considerable louder than the others.

The between 45 to 55 is definitely a clue I missed.

Mobil 1 15w50 does reduce the gear howl at 55 MPH vs regular 20w40.

Both of mine are loud between those speeds. Those big ol' straight cut gears are letting you know they are in there and doing their job.
Anybody remember the old "Rock crusher" 4-Speeds?

I agree with what others have said.  It's either normal transmission whine or a timing belt tensioner.  My money's on the tensioner.  Very easy to detect and fix if it is.

My bike whines pretty good at that speed range, and I chalk it up to the normal engine noise – solid lifters, straight cut tranny gears, etc.--but this gentleman says he senses something is really wrong, so it deserves further investigation on his part.  While it should be noted that a certain amount of "whining" is normal for our motors and transmissions, in my experience when you believe something is off, there's usually something to it.  One thing that might help sort it out is if it is constant and unchanging, then it's possibly normal. Anything intermittent or increasing usually indicates a real problem.  Good luck – let us know what you learn.

It could be a vacuum hose. They will squeal pretty loud.

Evening all, (here in Ireland) I got to two motorcycle shops today on my way home (1 honda dealship and another shop who has specialised in Wings for years and both told me it was probably not  over tightened tensioners as they would be heard at idle speeds. No real noise today until after 50miles . It actually started today at around 35 mph when I did. No performance issues. Got a bit noisier nearer home as it pretty much had been running most of the day. Sounds like a pulley with a bad bearing . Pull the clutch and it dies somewhat but not completely. I'm wondering if it could be a worn bearing where driveshaft goes into the transmission . The worn shaft I replaced may have an affect on it. What is the story with vacuum hoses ? How do they become noisy?

emmet,

If you still have factory vacuum hoses going to the center intake tubes for those carbs and one to the petcock.  Those three hoses almost always crack eventually.  If cracked then at certain vacuum pressures they can scream a little, not always but it is possible.  You would probably also have otherwise unexplained decal exhaust popping if vacuum lines were that cracked.

Evening all , update as promised, turns out the noise from the front end is a tensioner bearing on the way out. Full belt and tensioner replacement being done as I had no history on a belt change and 1999 is a while ago so better to be safe than sorry. Ride safe.  cooldude

You have to put your picture on the Internet somewhere (photobucket or flickr or
something).

Then type the link (URL) to your picture into your post and surround it with
the image twinkies...
