What I have is the 4" exhaust 18" extension from Air Flow, with the stock exhaust system in place with the piggies in tact.  What is quietest way I can make this system, plus eliminating the drone? I really like the look of the 4" and will keeping it in place.

I have researched the archives and would like to see if there is more info out there. Thanks

Perhaps what you are hearing is resonance of the tips?  You could spray the inside of the tips with rubberized undercoating.  I doubt heat would be an issue by the time exhaust exits the piggies, but those more experienced with playing with exhaust pipes can correct me.

grumpy's tips will reduce vibrating noise.   the drone issue is usually from drilling the baffles.

Drone is inherent with the Valkyrie's exhaust.

The reason Mother Honda put the piggies on there in the first place is to get the exhaust out to the rear of the exhaust tips so that the exhaust wouldn't resonate inside the tips.

That's exactly what the drone is.....the exhaust resonating inside the tips.  If you put longer tips on there, the exhaust isn't making it all the way out the rear to the end of the tips....ergo....drone.

His piggies are still intact.  If his piggies are still there, his baffles haven't been drilled.

You can do one or both of two things.

If you have the room (and I'm not sure you do), you can add a set of slip-in silencers.

http://shopping.rexmar.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=silencers-inline-insert

The other is to buy a set of Grumpy's tips.

You can usually find him on the Florida board.  He's in Tampa.

http://www.grumpysfabrication.com/product-pictures--store-link.html

He has the big bore and small bore tips.  If you want quite as possible, you'll want the small bore tips.

What you're trying to do is to disrupt the exhaust note as it exists the rear of the tips so it won't resonate in there.

In your case, I'm positive that a set of Grumpy's tips will do what you need.....plus, it'll really dress up the those new tips of yours.

The other thing you can do, which is a little more work, is to extend your existing piggies to the end or just past the tips.  This will completely eliminate the "drone" since the sound is no longer resonating inside the tip.  I used pieces of 3/4" copper pipe and couplings spray painted flat black to extend my piggies about an inch past my Hondaline aftermarket tips.  My Valk is very quiet now and much more enjoyable on long distance trips now that the drone is gone.

Extend the piggies.  The most noise that I hear at most any speed is the whine of the gear box...Jim Smiley

I'm referring to the one's that Honda produced as an accessory tip with the three barrels.

Pharmboy, your piggy extensions look great.  How did you make yours?

Here's a photo of the ones I have.  I'll try to get an actual photo of my setup with the extensions tonight.

These extensions involved far more difficulty and time than I ever imagined when I started.  The extensions are from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. (part # 03-06300) which has an ID that is 6/1000" more than the OD of the piggies.  A metal cut-off saw is almost a necessity.  (Measure twice & cut once.) Then it's polish & send out to be chromed.  The extensions were attached to the piggies by drilling & taping into the piggies once the extensions were in place. (I don't weld, but always wanted to.) The most difficult thing was making the Jigs to position the extensions and to drive on the 4" truck stacks.  There was quite a bit of head scratching & measuring since I wanted the extension to stick out 1/2" past the truck stacks and the extensions have to be attached to the piggies before driving the truck stacks onto the muffler.  I'll try to attach a picture of the two jigs that I came up with for these operations.  Making these took a full day's work and about every wood working tool that I own.  Without mounting truck stacks, making & installing extensions would be a breeze...Jim Smiley

I have a purely stock exhaust interstate with the only mod being the addition of 18" Air Flow flat cut tips vice the cheapo Honda tips (slash cut tips will be nosier no matter how you aim them).  It's pretty dang quiet (and easy to stall departing a stop, 'cause you can't even hear the motor at low revs).

The easiest way to make them quieter yet would be to stick on 20-21" flat cut tips that extended back ever farther.  You will drag them leaving aprons however.

I do not wear a full face (droning) helmet however.

Cheaper yet is ear plugs.

Or listen to an Ipod with ear buds.

You could make & insert Silencers in the stacks.  I invented these a dozen years ago.  Or more accurately, conjured up modding the OEM exhaust, rear baffle section so it would fit into the stacks easily, using a lathe.  I make these available when I have them.
Or you can do it if you can source an extra OEM exhaust. They are just over 7" long, so you need that much space aft of the biggies, inside the stacks.  You can also make these extra quiet by putting a big wad of SS wool between the exhaust outlets inside, and the silencer.  You can get SS wool at Amazon as muffler pack, among other places.
