Remember to drain the oil, the water pump is driven by the oil pump, when I did mine I learned the hard way....I didn't see anything in the service manuel about draining the oil...surprise, surprise... Grin

YES,...what was just stated...pulling the water pump without dumping the oil will put 4 quarts of oil on the floor in .09 seconds.   Ask me how I know,..LOL .

Yup!  Done that.  Only about one quart actually got on the garage floor before I got a pan under it.  So I must have reacted in .0225 seconds...

Why would a thermostat, be so hard to change.

Everything wears out.

The Water Pump did, why not the thermostat?

Here is a video that shows the area in question.

Would I do it, yes.

It can be got to by removing the plastic shield in front of the carbs.

is it easy, no.

Everything on this motor is hard to get too.

There's no reason to mess with the thermostat unless you want to.   Change the pump, change the coolant, new oil and filter would be good and ride her.

I found out about the water pump holding the oil in place the hard way also.  Way back in 01 or 02 when  Prestone coolant did not list silicants in the ingredients, my water pump went.

My dealer warranted it, but I changed it, hence the oil on the shop floor. Embarrassed
