I checked the rotors while putting a tire on the front, and they taper in the wear area from .170 to .150 on the inside (closest to the axle),,, quite a bit less than the recommended, thickness. They need to go back on right now, but a set of rotors are in my future. I wonder what experiences have been had with aftermarket rotors and pads, good or bad.

Don't have experience with replacement rotors but am curious how many miles on your current ones?? Haven't taken a measurement on mine but am thinking I might want to next time I do a front tire (within the the next 5k miles).

Cheers!

Hi
just replaced my rotors[or discs as we call them in uk] with EBC pads and discs and all seems good,
noticed the Ebc discs seem to be quite a bit lighter and are supposed to last longer but time will tell
hope this helps

No Experience with aftermarket rotors, yet anyway. I have used EBC Kevlar pads, like them a lot.

Back when Valk rotors were spendy, I used GL1800 Wing rotors. Replaced at 120K and now have almost 149K. No issues.

Hey Art, the bike has about 54K on it now, but it had 38K when I bought it and the rotors were right at the minimum 4mm (.157 in.) then. The pads were worn at that time so I replaced them with organic Kevler to slow down the rotor wear. I think the PO must have really used or abused the front brakes to have the rotors worn out at 38K, but the pistons in the calipers were hanging also and causing the brakes to drag more than they should which also contributed to the wear.

Thanks for the reply, Pancho! I've got 60k miles on my IS and ride it pretty aggressively so I'll probably want to budget for some rotors this winter.

Thanks again for the info.

Cheers!

My rear rotor developed an annoying lip as it wore. Do your
worn front rotors have a lip? I kept an eye on eBay and
got a "new" lipless rotor from a low mileage wrecked
bike for cheap...

Oh yeah, there is a "lip", it is pronounced enough that the calipers will not come off with the pads installed without spreading them out some.

I forgot about them until you said that Mike, but I did buy a set from eBay when I just got this bike. They were listed as much thicker than they actually turned out to be, they are right at 4mm and the guy refunded my money.   Now they are about 5 or 6 thou. better than the ones on the bike....  I think I just need to invest in a new set.
