Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I tried using the search bar but to no avail. I was wondering if anyone knew what parts I need to fix the damage. I know I need a new rear case because it's cracked. I also need a new gear that has lost a few teeth. Is there anything else that I need, such as orings  or gaskets?? Also does anyone know the part # to the starter idler gear ? I can't find it in the parts fiche. Thanks in advance for the help it's much appreciated. I'm looking forward to getting my bike back on the road.

I don't know what you could have put in the search that yielded no result.  I just put in "hydrolock repair" and there was more info than you could expect a quick response here.........try again  cooldude

Don't let this post scare you there has to be more than the petcock bad to cause a hydro lock. I have a '97 standard that you see in my post that have the original petcock never rebuilt and it works fine.

I live in Cincinnati Ohio. I'm not too worried about fixing it. I'm more worried about not riding for a while.....lol. Also while I'm in on it I am going to rebuild the carbs and do something with the petcock whether replace it or rebuild it. Plus I am going to detail and go over the engine with a fine tooth comb while its out of the bike.

Also is there anything else I should look into while I'm in on it?? I would rather do anything that needs done while its down and out the next month or so. Thanks

Carbs.  In order to experience hydrolock you do have to have a petcock that flows fuel when it shouldn't but also one or more float valves that allow more than a bowlful of fuel into a carburetor.

Willow is right..

I have a '99 Valk Tourer that is hydralocked right now. I'm deciding what to do with it but riding my hog in the meantime. It takes a faulty petcock PLUS a carb problem to cause this. Float valves or floats more than likely. I learned the hard way on this one. While you have it apart I would de smog it and replace all fuel and drain lines. Autozone had 5/32" which worked perfectly for me. I had lined the gas tank, replaced the oem petcock and rebuilt the carburetors but obviously missed something.

Mine tore the idle gear out of it after I had it running fine; the fuel leak was undetected until that fateful GROWL CLUNK when I tried to start it.

Good luck.

I just finished mine a couple months ago and it was not bad at all.  In addition to the idler gear you also will want to replace the oil seal at the clutch slave and the shaft, you will want new o-rings everywhere, clutch slave, alternator (while the engine is out go ahead and pull that apart and give it a gold cleaning and check your brushes), starter, also need gasket for rear case and clutch cover, if you are ordering in advance might i suggest a couple of dowels just in case one is rusty or you lose it like i did, I basically replaced every single gasket, o-ring, oil seal, and everything else I could find while I was at it.  If you have all the parts you need up front and do not lose any parts  uglystupid2 then it is a one day job.  While everything was apart I also replaced the airbox gaskets and the filter, and I went through the carbs, and de-smogged.  Every time you need a part you are in for another week wait so planning is the key. If I had what I needed it would have been done in two days max, but constantly waiting on parts and tools drug it out to nearly two months.

starter idler is part #
28106-MN5-010

Oh, and just go ahead and get yourself a drive shaft boot now and make life a little easier later on.

I bought my bike new in August 1996 and have never had a problem with either the petcock or the carbs, but I guess I better start training myself to turn off the fuel when I'm not riding it.  That hydrolock sounds nasty.  Embarrassed

Leaving the petcock in the open position means it is not automatically a bad petcock Smiley just to be sure folks are looking in the right places....

BB I am the same never had a problem and never turn my petcock off.  I also think that if folks would leave the damn carbs alone there wouldn't be the problems we all here about. And as far as them needing to be cleaned phooey ride it and they won't gum up.

Same here.  '97 Std & '00 I/S.  Original petcocks, always turned off when parked.  Carbs never opened up.  I use Sea Foam on a regular basis.
My Dad is the one who beat it into my head about turning the gas off.  So for me it is park, kickstand down, gas off, key off.
P.S.
Got a carb sync tool from Bon S. and will be using it on both bikes soon.   cooldude

Thanks for all the helpful tips! The guy I bought it off of let it do a lot of sitting I'm sure with the mileage being so low. I started taking it apart tonight and made it pretty far in the 2 hours I worked on it. The engine is about ready to come out of the bike! So did you guys make sockets or buy the oem sockets? That will be the next item I need. I'm not really in a rush so I am going to take my time and go through everything while the engine is out of bike so I know it's ready to go tons of miles with having to worry about this or that.

I bought all the parts but not the Honda brand.  I bought most of them online, and the local auto parts store had a few of them in stock at their place.  Let me know if you don't want to buy then all.  I may be able to work something out with you.

Once the monster is all fixed and back up running. Just tap the button. Anytime that dreaded CLANK is heard, stop, don't touch that button again until all cylinders are cleared.
