I asked the question about the old tech archives a couple of months ago. The reply from administration is

" I took it offline because searching those archives in the old system kills our server.  Its an extremely inefficient piece of software."

VRCC Staff "

It's too bad  because  there is a lot of information over there that is not available over here.

I've never looked in the old archives, have always found enough info here.

But if it is of value and it isn't available to all, how big is it anyways? Under 4GB (DVD size)? Maybe it would be nice to make a few copies and get them out to people at a reasonable cost ($5). Then they can make some copies at the same reasonable cost and get them out to others, and so on and so on.

In no time at all, everyone should have their own hard copy of these archives, and the information will not become lost.

In no time at all

Perhaps, no... most of the pictures are either gone or on-line
somewhere, some can probably be scraped out of photostash.

I don't know how the old tech-archive is implemented, but it is
probably not just a big pile of html that could be copied onto a DVD,
mounted, and gone through with a web browser, there's probably
"back-end" LAMP-like thing. That probably doesn't have any "L"
in it  Wink

There's a ton of knowledge in there, but it would probably
be hard and expensive to get it out and onto some kind
of searchable DVD.

There's actually a theory that a whole bunch of "digital stuff"
from our era will be gone in 20 or 30 years, unlike stuff from
other eras...

Got any programs saved away on paper-tape? Good luck finding a paper tape reader.

Got any data saved on a 8-inch floppy? Good luck reading it.

Got any data stored on mag tape? The last time I used a mag tape was on a VAX.

Where will all that data from "the cloud" be in 20 years, or next week even, if
your choice of cloud providers goes out of business...

I heard a key-note talk about this recently...

I'm trying to find my VHS tape of my wedding. Then there is my 2 year olds birthday on a mini-VHS. I want to copy these over to digital. If I can find the tapes, then the trouble will be in finding a player.

Everything else is prints and digital photos. I've all my digital pics on my PC, 1 TB backup drive, and thumb drives in my fire proof safe.

I figure that digital will outlast me. Can't see the backwards Tech not being readable for my lifetime.
