Rolling Thunder 2017

Palm Springs, CA

« on: May 11, 2015, 08:42:35 PM »

Twice a year the Crazy Horse Memorial allows visitors the experience of walking out to, and ascending the mountain, and walk out on the arm of this great project. One of the two weekends coincides with InZane and this has been on my bucket list since 1993 (my first visit). I plan to arrive at the Memorial by 12:00pm and begin the walk by 1:00pm (latest start time). Anyone wanting to join me is welcome. Am sure they will have an evening of great sites also if wanting to stay. This is one of the greatest stories of American History and a place you will not regret spending some time at. Let me know!

Sounds like a great day trip,  Rushmore is only 15 miles away as well.   I was maybe 7 the last time i was there.

What day are you going? And how far is it from ground zero (Inzane)?

Just on my phone now but it's not too far.  Mt Rushmore is about 70 miles from Spearfish, and Crazy Horse is only about 20 miles from Rushmore.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

You looking at a all day ride to do this loop. There is no 'easy' way from point A to point B. You will burn a tank of fuel if not more.

The memorial is 5 miles North of Custer on US-16/US-385.  It is as little as 66 miles from Spearfish, taking I-90, US-85 to Deadwood and then US-385 South.  The longer and more senic route is US-14A (Spearfish Cannon Road) South out of Spearfish, then US-85 to Newcastle and US-16 East through Custer.  That route is 103 miles one way.  You can combine these routes by starting with the second,  continuing on US-14A and US-85 NE into Lead and picking up US-385 South just East of Lead.

You may be headed down there several days as there are many attractions in that vicinity, including US-16A, Needles Highway, Custer State Park, and of course Mount Rushmore...

If things go as planned for me, I will be heading in from Buffalo, WY on Sunday and driving straight to the Memorial so as to arrive for the Volks March. They have a large portion of the lot set aside for Bike Parking. Obviously any Valks there would be from InZane. The ride is beautiful from Spearfish, and the event is the biggest of the year for them. They will have a night laser show, and probably a mountain blasting. If you haven't seen this Memorial, it would be a must see while you are in the area. I am planning to start my trek at 12:30-12:45 and will look to meet others at that time in the bike section of the lot. I will be riding an all custom 99 tourer (red/silver) with an "Iron Sharpens Iron" graphic on the fairing. Look forward to meeting any and all who make it out.

How difficult is the ascent?

I have a knee replacement & can do some, but not a lot, of climbing.

Some details for you DK, Looks like a 6 mile round trip hike that does have some rough and steep terrain.
