I know this is not a very technical topic, but the 03 standard I just bought is gorgeous and quality in every way. Yet, down below the petcock towrd the bottom rear of the engine, is a square shaped silver cover that flexes and crinkles like its made of aluminum foil. What is this wrapper covering? (maybe a hearty candy bar for emergencies?) and is there a real chromed metal replacement. A brand, or site to buy would be most helpful. Thanks in advance for your advice.   Mike in NY

You must be talking about the alternator cover. Nobody ever made a metal
one, that's it. They used to be $35, now they're mostly north of $200.

If yours is that bad, then remove the chrome and finish the plastic underneath to what you want.

Spray chrome, paint, powder coating, etc.

One of our VRCC members (Gary Eckert) did make some metal alternator covers. However he died some time ago.

Well, that's what I paid in 2014. I guess they caught on. It was good while it lasted.

A while back, I came across the web page of a guy who is caroming plastic side covers.

He may be of help.

Mine is like yours & I'm going to check this out after InZane.

I'll post what I find.

Dan.
