2001 I/S St. Michael MN

« on: June 17, 2015, 08:24:11 AM »

I'm slowly going through things on my new to me 01 Valk I/S with 53k on it.  I've been reading through threads getting familar with things that need to be checked and replaced so I'm putting together a To Do list.
I would appreaciate input on anything i'm over looking.  I should be able to talk to the previous owner in a couple of week and find out what has been and what hasn't been done to the bike so i may be able to cross some things off the list.

Shock bushing are on order and will be replacing as soon as they show up also have a slight index in the steering head bearing that i will taking care of this fall and i've changed the oil and filter so here is what i have so far.

Check Airfilter
Check Valve Adjusments
Replace 14 year old timing belts
Clean Alternator and replace brushes if necessary
Rear End service
Change brake and clutch fluid

antifreeze coolant should be drained and replaced every few years and for sure once every 5 years regardless of mileage driven (in my opinion).

Rear gearcase oil replaced with synthetic as well once every 4-5 years or so, depending on mileage of course driven as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about timing belt replacement until  closer to 100K miles, most will last easily to that regardless of how old our bikes are.

Some replace antifreeze/gear case oil, etc. once every 2 years or so, but those are probably higher mileage riders say 8-10K miles per year vs. me driving 3-5K miles per year.

No matter what,  keep changing your near 4 qts. of oil with synthetic at least once per riding season.  I find fresh oil even if I say drive only 3,000 miles per riding season helps shifting and runs smoother.

Good idea to replace clutch and brake fluids every tire change, for some that will be every 2 years, others every 4-5 years.   Mine still looks pretty clear after 4 years of use but will be changing it next year when I get the new front tire installed.

The DOT would argue with this; they recommend every 2 years, no matter what, because of moisture uptake. I change the clutch fluid every year because of the higher temperatures that darken it faster, and I don't want the clutch to stop working in a long crawl.
