Not sure if this is technical, but here goes.

I have a Mustang seat on my '98 Tourer that is probably nearly as old as the Valk.  I know the first owner put it on and he only had it for two years.  This year, I experienced severe Butt Burn on the way to Inzane and on the return trip.  Even the Air Hawk, which I have used for years when traveling long distances did not help.  Ok, this old fart is getting soft, I admit that.  I have considered an Ultimate saddle but their selection simply does not fit me.  Looked at the Russell Day Long but can't get past the sticker shock.

Now I'm considering having my Mustang saddle rebuilt, simply replacing the foam with modern memory foam, gels or whatever.  No reshaping of the saddle should be needed.  Has anyone had any experience doing this?  The business I'm looking at is http://www.astechseat.com

Bob, I had an older Harley solo redone once, and they did a nice job (small Latino shop in CA); I later replaced it with a Mustang Wide Vintage solo.  I also replaced an old Ultimate last year with a new one.  I showed it to Dez and he thought it was one of his oldest seats, and it was really shot.  I could probably push it down three inches with just my hands.  I did not really realize how shot it was, and had been using my Airhawk on it nearly full time (and still was getting sore on long rides).  Since I got my new Bigboy, I have not used my Airhawk once.

I have no opinion on the shop you linked (or any rebuilder), all you can do is look for customer reviews or comments online.  Seats wear out slowly over the years (like our bodies).  If you liked your Mustang, maybe another would be best (they were always my favorite, until Ultimates).  If you get a rebuild and don't like it, you can try to get some money from it against something else.

Just in case you bite the bullet on an Alaska Leather Sheepskin, try the same old coupon code of deadsheep for a 10% discount. I just picked one up and it worked for me. Shipping $7.15, received in 3 days. Still yet to be used...

I not only started using a sheep skin I started wearing silk type under wear , my old style cotton jockeys gave me the "monkey butt" on long trips , I also wear bicycle shorts with the padded seats under my Joe Rocket pants . We did a 6,000 mile trip a few years ago and I was comfortable all the way with this set up .

I have had several seats reshaped, refoamed, and reupholstered by Sargent Seats of Jacksonville FL.

They have been in the "SEAT" business for many years and offer the best customer service I"ve ever experienced.
Their work is based on your seat pan (OEM or aftermarket) and their prices are very reasonable.

Contact them at http://www.sargentcycle.com/

You will be pleasantly surprised.

What size did you get for your Ultimate Big Boy seat? Did you choose "sheared" or "long hair"?
Thanks!

Momz,

Thanks for that resource.  I'll have to contact Sargent.  It's interesting that they handle Mustang Seats, which I have, so they should be the most knowledgable of anyone I have found.  I believe after 17 years and 93,000 miles, some improvement is possible...

While Airhawk, sheepskin and other pads/beads, underwear, and powders can help, at some point you just need a new seat.

I lugged around an old comfy foam single mattress (no box spring/no frame) through many years of single college dorms, flats, apartments, and back home every summer.  It was tattered, lumpy and stained and looked like a reject from Motel Bug. When I got married the first time, the new wife said..... that thing is not coming to our house, get rid of it.  So with sadness and many fond memories it was delivered for midnight deposit to a Kmart dumpster.   Grin

Just some FYI. I too was told the Ultmate seat would not work for me. I am 5'9" they told me even the Low Boy would not work. Still wanted to try one. Found a great deal on E Bay for a Low Boy 3 piece set.
I have the best ride ever now, it works great for me. It helped with reaching the road as well as being a great seat.  Cool

My sheepskin from Abby International in Portland OR comes off with buckles, I just unsnap it and stick it in a saddle bag to keep it dry.

I bought the separate front/pillion sheepskins. They also have a large one piece.

Also, look into some "Anti Monkey Butt" powder at Walmart, load your underwear up with some of that before the long ride. WalMart used to carry it.

Maybe get some riding shorts from a bicycle shop to wear under your pants. They have no large seems, and usually have a chamoise to wick away moisture and pad the bottom side.

I carry diaper rash ointment if it still occurs after all else fails, but the sheep skin seems to do the trick.

Is this "butt burn" different than being "saddle sore"??

I never needed any types of "powders" or anything, But if I go on a LONG jaunt without packing in quite a few miles beforehand.......MY butt gets sore!!

I got to our campsite one night, after several days of riding. Someone said "RELAX!! Have a seat!!"  I declined. I stood the entire night, until I could lay down in my sleeping bag.  SITTING....was the LAST thing I wished to do, until the next days ride!!!!   LOL!!!!

With a real winter off season I do like Led each spring. Start working in 100 mile rides to condition my butt.
It's like training for a long run. My brother lives 500 miles from me it's a 10 hour ride with gas stops and
holding the speed to 5 over the posted limit. Usually it's a little faster I travel with the traffic.

I'm using the newer Honda seat which I think is a big improvement over the 98 Tourer seat.

I too am uncomfortable on long trips with all my seats, except for my Corbin on my ACE Tourer. Held me like loving hands.

Monkey Butt and Butt Burn, I don't think I have. I'm just uncomfortable, and starts after the first 100 miles, and then every 50 miles after. I use a loose full sheep skin also. My co-pilot doesn't need it, so I fold it in half and ride on that. Softer, but still get uncomfortable and just want to get off as soon as I can.

Was hoping Ultimate was going to be in Inzane, and I was going to get one of their seats and ride it around the Black Hills as a Try-it Before you Buy-it deal they have. But they cancelled.

On my ride home, I took the double sheep skin, and when my butt started to become uncomfortable, I pull it forward on the seat, so my butt was overhanging it. All of a sudden, 100+ miles to the next fill up wasn't too much of a chore, I wasn't looking at getting off the bike at 75 miles and rest my butt, now it was closer to 125 miles, just before my limit to fill up of 150 miles.

On the long trips, thinking how I can make this better, again I thought what I'll do, is buy a can of ridged expanding spray foam, a plastic or zipp lock bag, flatten them, spray some foam into it, let it expand, and then sit on it on my bike in a riding position, and wait for it to harden.

I'm thinking like some others have said, that the old metal tractor seat was one of the most comfortable seats they every sat on.

This ridged "pan" that I was going to end up with, would be a good start to a custom mold of my buttocks. I may need to even remove the OEM seat from the bike, or the foam off the oem pan. Just still in the planning stages, but something I can work with.

A few points:

1.  I use my alaska leather sheepskin in the rain on purpose.  Have for years.  Rain that runs off your helmet and jacket will soak your crotch without it, unless you have very good and new rain pants.  The sheepskin sits you above the water; your ass stays relatively dry.  Hang the sheepskin up in the motel and it will be dry (enough) in the morning.  Rain won't ruin sheepskin.  Sheep would be in trouble if it did. Works for me.

2. The shape of the seat and the hardness of the foam is more important than anything else.  It needs to be shaped to fit your butt.  Like a metal tractor seat.  The foam needs to be pretty firm so it won't push up the veins in your groin and shut them off.  This is from Marty Rood, a doctor on the VOA board 15 years ago.  With his collaboration, I modified my OEM seat, shaped it correctly, and installed a polymer pad and had it recovered.  Best seat I ever had.  See http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Rood_Saddle_Mod/rood_saddle_mod.html

3. Paragraph 2 - re: the shape of the seat - is why everyone loves the Russel Daylong, who has one.  If you want to save yourself the hassle of finding what your butt likes, just bite the bullet and cough up the coin and have them make your seat.  Their seats are shaped a lot like a tractor seat because that WORKS.

Yes, yes it is. When I raise up on the pegs of my IS to my motocross position to air out my (well you know) so I don't get "Butt Burn" the nose of the sheep skin folds back in the wind. Then I have to reach down and put it back into position which looks just as silly as me in the motocross position!  2funny
