Man, what a terrible day at work.... and it's only Monday...

My wife comes home everyday and says "I LOVE my job!" and explains it all to me and is in a great mood...

I come home, grumble, throw down my keys and get a beer.

How many of you really like your job? I've got a theory most of us are just kinda puttin up with it.

I work so I have money to ride and play. The work doesn't matter much to me. I love to ride.

I actually do. I don't like the 'regional Health system' I work for but I like my EMS job. The medics are great to work with and we get to know everyone personally. Insurance is good but the pay is average. WAY below what any medic should make for what we have to do. Its fun to work on pts and see stuff that others never knew existed. Some of the pts suck esp when you go on them every other day for a 'illness'.  Undecided Fun to wrestle with the drunk ones. I like working 24 hrs straight and sometimes working 48+ hours straight. Plus where else can you cut peoples clothes off and not get in trouble!   Cheesy

I'm semi-retired from my printing business that I started in 1978. I know what it is like to love what I do/did...A lot of stress, though.

Maybe some advice for some dissatisfied with their job........Don't have any!  2funny

I don't like my job but with 2 in college, I'm not going anywhere. I work rotating shifts, we change every week plus I have to work 1 or 2 weekends a month.

One good thing has come from me not liking my job.  All three of my sons know what a good education can do for you.  I don't have a college degree and can't really find another job for the same money, so they all saw that I was stuck in my crappy job.

Oldest is an X-ray tech in Chicago, middle son graduated from University of Illinois and is now going to law school at the University of Iowa, and the youngest started at Western Illinois, going to be a cop, then he hopes to move to DEA or ATF.

I don't love my job but I like it alot.  I work for Fritolay as a District Sales Leader.  I manage about 28 sales people who deliver to about 1200 accounts weekly.  The money and benefits are great but the hours are long.

10 years... right in the middle.  Shocked

It doesn't make sense to change careers at this point, but sometimes I wonder if it's worth it to continue on, seeing as I'll have to get another job in 10 years anyway...

I'm seriously considering taking a break in service to finish my Engineering degree...

Don't want to make anyone jealous, but I really love my job and my boss.  We get free insurance, bonuses, trip to NY every year and spending money.  I work for a rancher so we get free meat, (elk, buffalo, beef and sometimes pork.)  He also wants us to keep up on the news so everyone has a tv at their desk (news right).  Can't get any better.  Oops forgot, we also get free lunch everyday.

I really like mine. I have taught public school for 32 years. I could have retired 3 years ago, but they moved me out of the core areas and let me teach American Sign Language as a foreign language. The kids mostly like it (like over 90% of them). I hang a sign outside my door on Mondays that says TGIM. uglystupid2
I have taught the MSF classes for 17 years and still just have a blast doing that. I have been training the MSF instructors  for about 6 years and that is tons of fun. I have been doing quality control inspections on these classes for several years and love that when the Coaches want to get better. The ones who think they have nothing to learn are a PITB though. So, I am at about a 90% satisfaction level which, to me, is awesome!. cooldude cooldude

I think Drew Carey said it best:

Kate: "I just can't stand working here anymore!"

Drew: "Oh, you hate your job, why didn't you say so. There's a support group for that, it's called EVERYBODY...  they meet at the bar!"

But seriously, I can honestly say... I hate my job... imagine, near 20 years of everyone lying to you... everyday. It got old 15 years ago.
But alas... I still do it, and do it well (if I do say so myself)... 10 years and 10 months to go...

I wouldn't say I love my job. But its a great job great pay and great benefits. Won't find another like it. Work for a subcontractor where we machine and assemble landing gears for planes military and commercial. No pressure other than a lousy setup or a rework part. Bosses are cool and while my machine runs I get to surf the net and take naps. Oh btw I'm at work now. Downside is the serospace industry is either wide open or nothing -ve seen and been thru a few layoffs but always managed to get called back. That's the nice side of working in a Union shop.

like it a lot.....I used to love it about 3.5 years ago.....

I am a Landscape Crewleader for the local City/County Govt......I take care of the 20+ blocks of Downtown Athens, GA...home of the Univ. of Ga....I started in March of '96...the year of the Atlanta Olympics.....I have a crew of 2 Groundskeepers and two state inmates...

Landscape Mngt has about 35 folks ...We have 3 cost centers,...Buildings(one I'm in), Right of Ways, and Parks......I'm the most educated of the other Crewleaders.....and even though there are several guys who have been there 5-15 yrs longer than me, after 5 yrs, I passed then up in annual pay due to high performance appraisals...other than one guy who was one paygrade above me and the other CL's before I even started....from year 5-10....I was sent to every computer class they have, Supervisor training class and took passed the test at the end of it with the highest score from all other departments in the Govt.....I am a Georgia Certified Landscape Professional....an ISA Arborist, GA Cert. Pesticide Applicator.....I have about every professional cert. there is in my line of work...

The Landscape Mngr. had me in a program that the County Mngr wanted implemented called "Succession Planning"....I spent year 5-10 "filling" in any areas I was weak in....the Parks Supervisor had a definate retirement date and they were training me for her spot...she told me that in the 35 yrs she'd been with the Govt., no one had ever been more qualified for the job than me......well, at about the 3 month point before she retired, one of her CL's decided that he'd like to try for her job...she never even told me he was interested...I was coordinating a large installation project supervising all 3 of the buildings crews during that time and this guy was back at the shop sucking up and KA.....but I lost the promotion to THAT peckerhead mainly because they(landscape mngr.) needed to "throw" the Leisure Serv. Dept. a bone by promoting someone they were already familiar with because they were holding out on signing a mutual serv. contract between our departments....first time in 9 yrs they'd ever hesitated due to the fact THEY had a new director...so, politics and the chance that MY supervisor was going to move up leaving her spot to me (which never happened) knocked me out of a promotion that I'd worked for for almost 5 years....

I was VERY, VERRRRY pissed off for about 9-12 months...it was NOT a pleasure to be around me at work during that time....I slacked off for about a half-day, but my work ethic would not allow me to do that with a clear conscience...I ended up working even harder to take my mind off of it....I ended up having to have a couple of closed door meetings with my supervisor(she was always behind me) and the Landscape Mngr.....I didn't hold anything back and told them how bitter it had made me.....and I'm still bitter about it 3 yrs and one month later....I had to let the most severe anger go, because it was tearing my guts up.....as silly as I act on here, I was very serious at work.....I can see why that good ppl who work for the govt become jaded over time...I know my job inside and out and bored with it at times, but I am very thankful to have it especially since it pays pretty high for my line of work.....my body has started to cry foul in the last 3-4 yrs from pushing so hard in a strenous occupation....that's why I had wanted to get promoted so that I could work my "mind" muscles more and body a little less.....

The ROW Supervisor is retiring sometime soon....I'm just not sure I want to go through getting let down again for the same reasons.....at least I got a little electric cart out of the deal and  I let my crew take the work truck, trailer and $40,000 in mowers and tools out while I handle the detailed work.....Sorry it got long....just something that is near my heart!!.. cooldude

"They pick someone that will look better on their "diversity" report..."

The other prick(White guy same as me but 5 yrs older)...he had barely finished HS and that was about it....he did a good job for a not so caring supervisor....couldn't compare to a good job in the Buildings section....he'd tried to get a job at some other places a couple of years before that so he wasn't nearly as Loyal as I was....he's a real asshole according to about 33 of those 35 ppl at my job....his honesty leaves a LOT to be desired...he broke a new piece of equipment and put it back in the equip barn for the next man to deal with without saying anything but he was "found" out about that later.....he has a hard time getting along with most of his own crews now as well as the other Dept. that he has to work with.....and to top it ALL off, the two guys they were throwing a bone to, left the govt. about a year after he was promoted....what a slap to the face!!!......Anger??....you bet...I'll never forget it..... Wintel/Linux/VMWare Systems Administrator at EDS/Hewlett Packard (I.E. Professional computer geek), and getting to train the team that will replace me in South Africa right now (Turns out India's too expensive now)...

When I'm able to do my job, I love it... The BS bureaucracy, paperwork, etc, sucks the joy outta it, but...

Might be time to start researching a chance, but it'd be hard, been doing IT my whole professional life, and not to brag, but I'm good at what I do... But 20% pay cut tomorrow, plus quite likely 100% pay cut in the next few months isn't fun to have staring you down...

Now Junior! Being a railroad engineer I could be offended  tickedoff , but I am not. I realize it is hard to believe that a railroad engineer could have any education  Shocked , as they say a trained monkey could run a train  Cheesy ! However, some of the most educated people I know are RR Engineers and I'm talking masters degrees  cooldude , etc. Prior to 1985 the RR was a good job with excellent benefits and schedules. Now it is a job with fair pay, unreal 24/7 365 day schedules, cut benefits, and a lot of furlows  crazy2 . I love running trains  coolsmiley , but I hate the company and most of the management that works there, the politics is unreal. But as many have said right now I do it to pay bills  Smiley and hopefully will have a decent retirement, if it is still there when I get there. But I truly dream of the day I can say "Take this job and SHOVE IT"  angel ! Ride safe!!

Stanley I can appreciate what you are going through. That is exactly why I got out of Law Enforcement, got tired of of all the "90 day wonders" ,to quote someone else, get promoted to positions they had no qualifications for, but were ultimately the lesser threat to replace the person that was promoting them! Hang in there SS what comes around goes around and they will eventually get theirs. The waiting is the hard part. Personal satisfaction in the job you do and maintaining that is the true sign of a professional. JDW  cooldude

When I was in the Supervisor training course back in 2005, there were several police officers, sheriff Deputies, and folks from many other dept's in there.....One of the police officers begged me to transfer to the police dept....and even brought me an application to class one day....as good as that made me feel, I had to decline because I'm just not interested in that line of work...I'm too easy going 95% of the time, and if I were to see some "dirty" business going on INSIDE the PD, I'd have had a real tough time with that...I guess i hold some professions to a higher standard even though I know there are "bad apples" in every profession.....

I mostly love my job. I book my own appointments and take off when I need to. I contract to the oil companies here in Houston and take care of their international employees that are moving here from all points of the globe. It's actually a great "mom" job because I can be home when the kids are home if I need to be. I don't have an office to go to...work from home OR out in the field when my peeps arrive. We do business in 48 states.... we are always looking for new reps, so if anyone is looking for a job let me know. I saw the other day they were looking for a rep in San Angelo TX. I don't know anyone there.

Most of the people I meet are awesome. There are certain groups that are more difficult to work with but the good out weighs the bad so I'm hanging with it.

Sometimes I like my job, mostly I dislike it and sometimes I hate it. I'm the lead mechanic/electrician at our plant. As long as I refuse to go salary “which I will always refuse” I mostly work 38 to 45 hour work weeks. Sometimes even a 32 hour week which is awesome. It would be endless 70+ hour weeks for much less money per hour if I went salary.

I enjoy trouble shooting a really tough problem and making it right. I enjoy training my helper/apprentice in the trade and I enjoy walking away from a piece of equipment knowing that I fixed it. Knowing that it’s safe and ready to rock. That I like.

I don't enjoy never knowing when someone will break something when I'm ready to leave and cause me to stay late. I don’t enjoy it when someone just doesn’t want to work so they call maintenance. I don't enjoy the politics and always wondering when I'll be forced out because of my refusal to drink the company Kool-Aid and sell my soul for a salaried job. I enjoy my time off too much to give up the last few good years of life that way.

I’m slowing rebuilding my old barn with the intention of starting a machine shop catering to the local maintenance shops. This will hopefully give me a job I can do when I’m too old to climb into and out of hot, dirty, dangerous machines. And will also hopefully give me the time to enjoy life. Of course I’m not a machinist and am counting on my son Andy to teach me the trade. I’m hoping old dogs can learn new tricks. Smiley

We hope to make some custom bike parts and perhaps some custom firearm parts also but right now it’s still just a dream.

I have the best job in the world....MOTHER!!!

My job has been made easy by being blessed with an amazing son, for those of you that have not met Noah you're missing out. Noah has always been mature for his age but he's really grown into a wonderful young man that Im so proud of as would his Dad would be. I told him today he was 15 going on 30. When Im sad he holds my hand and lets me cry and when Im happy he laughs with me. When I lost my job in April he asked if I would consider taking the summer off and spending it with him. Well I don't know any teenagers that would ask that but it was the best thing I've ever done.  We've done alot of healing this summer and it's been hard but we're each others rock. The pay is horrible but the benefits are out of this world!!

Real happy with mine, good company and benefits. Been at the airport for 16 years working on monorail trains.
My parent company is Bombardier, Canadian but a joy to work for. The picture is part of my shop with 2 down for annual
maintenance.

I really do love my job.  I'm an M.E.O. (major equipment operator) in a power plant here in Michigan.  It's a oil and gas fired dual peaker unit with 2 650 megawatt turbines.  since it is a peaker, we only run when the load is high.  The only downside is that I have to work a schedule of 8 and 2, then 7 and 4.  The 2 days off are Thurs and Fri, and the 4 days off are Sat through Tues.  I love the 4 days off in a row, but I hate only haveing 1 weekend off every three weeks.  I also have a 142 mile round trip to work.  But I don't mind that, as I ride the Lady every day. cooldude

Oops forgot, we also get free lunch everyday.

i want his job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Evil

AV, if you're AD Army, I've got 3 letters for you:  PCS.  Go spend some time in Europe if you can.  Take your valk with you and hang out with the European VRCC.  I'm sure Dag can show you some amazing sights.

I'm like you and my wife is like yours. Nuff said.  coolsmiley

Gotta do what's right for you.
Sometimes those "gut" feeling are telling you something. I was miserable after 13 years in the service. Everyone told me to "tough it out". I didn't and don't regret it, the service was changing even back then.
I respect the men and women who serve, although I could not under the current administration. Weigh out your benefits and think about it. You can have bad days anywhere, civilian and military. Same goes for bad bosses. In the end, it's all what you make of it and your attitude. Gotta do what's right for you. Good luck cooldude

I love my job.  I have days where I am frustrated or want to be somewhere else, but I do love it. I'm happy with what I do. I'm happy that I'm able to do it.

My wife is simply putting up with her job. She's applying for other oppurtunities.  She's burned out.

excellent advice! I spent my first 6 years overseas (Germany, Korea, Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq) and loved every minute of it. Unfortunately the only overseas assignments left for my very specialized MOS are Iraq and Afghanistan. I done did that already Smiley
If I could PCS to Germany tomorrow, i'd do it.

I love my job, surrounded by friendly smart people. I've worked here for over 27 years, there's
people all around me that have been here longer than me. Never run out of stuff to learn, heck I
can't even keep up. I work with several teams, we try to figure stuff out, and then make stuff,
or put stuff together... sort of endless noodling around, always something different... depending
on what's happening Thursday, I might ride the Valkyrie up the Blue Ridge Parkway on Friday  cooldude
