cobra radiator cap
«

I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I had a little chrome chipping off wich I'm going to try and get a new one.
When I installed it I mounted the set screw with just a little pressure. Took it down the block and noticed I had a lot of coolest leaking out of the cap area. Is this a known thing with the caps? Are they very sensitive to side pressure and what not.
I took the cover off and did a test ride and warmed up the engine. No problems. Did an 85 mile test ride.. just to make sure lol.

SOP is to always hide the set screw around back, but that may not be the optimal spot for it based on a leak. My Cobra (and another) has never caused a leak.

When I installed my chrome cap, I had to grind some material off the bottom edge to get it to clear the overflow line. I also stopped using the set screw to lock the cap...

Well i did some testing. I just took it off and it seems to be fine. No leaks at all. I put it back on but left the screw as loose as I felt comfortable with (just over finger tight) and it took much longer but began to drip again. not nearly as much but enough.
It touches the overflow line but I dont have pressure on it. It sets pretty well and the line seems to be in pretty good shape. no cracks. There is, at least with the cobra, a notch setting for the existing screw on the factory cap. Only one way to put it on. The screw sets 90 degrees from the front - engine side. Cant really see it.
I would think that the cap would fall off on the first bridge if I didnt have a little pressure on it. @ $45 ya know..

Try bending the tangs on your original cap to make it slightly tighter than it is now.
You should be able to tighten the set screw but I never depend on just the set screw on anything anymore. I've lost radiator cap covers, those chrome covers over the top of the fork cap, etc.
Now I always add a dab of RTV to the center of such chrome pieces. It makes it still easy to remove but not go flying off because of the set screw backing out or vibrating up off of what it is mounted too.
