My Avon is needing to be replaced sometime next month and I have been wondering about experimenting with some other Brand Tires  ....  How does the Shinko 230 Tour Master , the Shinko 890 Journey or the Bridgestone Excedra Tire fair mounted on a Valkyrie as far as mileage & handling ??  I have had good wear with my Avon but just curious about other brands ....  Thanks the Geezer  crazy2

I've used the Shinko 890 journey and the Bridgestone excedra . The Bridgestone was fine got about 13 k out of it. I had problems with the Shinko and won't get another. (Vibration problems)

A new Avon Cobra is the best tire you can put on a Valk. I've had a few sets with no problems. Keep it at 42 PSI.

Not a Valkyrie, but I ran a Shinko Tourmaster 230 on an old Goldwing and while it wore fast it was quiet, smooth, tracked straight, and had excellent traction both wet and dry.  It began cupping at 5,000 miles but I had been running it at 32 pounds.  Once I bumped it to 40 the cupping stopped, and I was able to get another 3,000 miles from it.

I started commuting every day on that bike mid-March this year, which here in WI means some mornings below freezing with plenty of salt and sand on the roads.  The Shinko was 75% gone then, and 95% gone by the time I sold it in May.  I felt completely confident on that tire up to the very end.

A set of Dunlop E-3s works well on my old Goldwing, got 18K miles out of them as well a as good handling.  I have no idea how they would do on a Valkyrie, or even if they have the correct size. The Goldie has 15 inch rear and 16 inch front. Yes, it is near time for anther set. Hoser

I totally agree!  cooldude  My last Avon Cobra had 19K before I changed it out. IMO Shinko is "stinko".

I've got e3's on my valk and been very happy with them.  Can't speak for high milers as I don't get to put on as many add I'd like to, but they were on the bike when I bought it almost 4 years ago and are still in great shape.

I put approximately 2000 miles on a half gone e3 before changing to this Cobra AV 71.
I have no opinion on wear yet, but handling is much improved.
In fairness I suspect that the e3 had a couple of bulges down the center line. Delamination?
This Cobra seems to have fixed most of the handling issues I have encountered with this bike, given there were so few to begin with.
Did the Cobra underperform in some aspect?

Hey wct69 , I was very pleased with the new Avon Cobra except for one thing .... When I had the original Avon Venum , it was quiet and handled great but I noticed I guess with the new tread design on the Cobra , I have road noise coming from up front like you hear on Off Road 4X4 tires on pavement ..... Like I said earlier I was just curious about other brand tires for my Valk . ....

OG Richard,   I have only heard good thinga about the Venom.  Alas, they are out of production -  to my understanding.  I went  with the next best thing, Cobras.j
I wouldn't  have a clue about the road noise,  my cobra 6 into 6 pipes ingeniously conceal any road noise that might be coming off of a tire.  I loves these pipes more and more as my heard acuity abates.

FWIW, Venoms had problems, like blowouts. The Cobra is a far superior tire IMO.  Undecided

I too prefer the feel of the Avon but truthfully, before you judge, almost any new tire will feel better than an old worn tire of any brand.

Well it looks like I have decided to stick with the Avon Cobra which was a No Brainer and quit dreaming of experimenting with other tires for my Fat Lady .... I'll be shopping on Flea bay and on line for the best price .... I had run across a new 150-80-17 Avon Cobra on Flea bay a while back for $145 with Free Shipping and missed it , soooo until next pay day , I'll be shopping around hopefully for another good deal ...  Thank you all for your opinions ,Thanks the  Geezer   crazy2

Just had the Shinko Journey de-laminate on me with about half it tread life left. I use to be an advocate for Shinko tires but won't run them again because of this.

I think I've had issues with most every tire but Shinko.....  Well, there was a recall on two series..the 747 and 757, and WPS covered them both by sending me tires to replace those recalled. They were shelf spares not yet installed.   There was an alleged delamination issue with the 747, and they sent the 757, then when the 757 was recalled they sent Metzler's.  Not a real fan of Metz since they wear way too fast.  I had a set of Shinko SE980 on my Green Valk and all was good.   I had  2 sets of Avon Venoms and those wore to the cords in the exact same spot according to tire mold markings on both tires.  I had a set of Dunlop E3s that were out of round from the get go, and both front/rear wore out at the same time at about 6k.  I usually get twice the mileage from a front tire over the rear.

Got an Austone rear now with E3 front and only because the E3 was new when I got this bike.  It started a bounce and I added 8oz of Ride On to see if that clears it up......if not, I have a new Shinko 980 in standby mounted on spare wheel.

The tire that de-laminated was a Shinko Journey SE890. No recall that I can find one that tire.
